Title: Plural of nouns
Aim: To familiarize students with the plural of nouns for their daily use.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Give orally some nouns in singular and their plural form;
2. Match some sentences with their plural form;
3. Put singular nouns in the plural form.
Prerequisites: Students have already been taught cardinal numbers.
Anticipated problems: Students may have difficulties with the irregular plural.
Anticipated solutions: The teacher will lay emphasis on it.
Stage I: Presentation (14mns)
Step 1: greeting
Teacher: Good morning class
Pupils: good morning sir
Teacher: how are you?
Pupils: fine and you?
Teacher: I’m fine too. Thank you very much and sit down.
Step 2: date telling and writing
Teacher: what’s the day today?
Pupils: today is ………………………
Teacher: very good, come and write it on the board!
Pupils: …………………..
Step 3: Warm-up
Teacher: class , stand-up. We are going to sing.
Step 4: Announcement of the lesson (1mn)
Teacher: Today, we are going to see a Grammar lesson on plural of regular nouns.
(Teacher then writes the nature and the title of the lesson on the board.)

TEACHER: (writing on the board): Here are some words
1- Teacher 1- Teachers
2- Day 2- Days
3- Half 3- Halves
4- Baby 4- Babies
5- Bus 5- Buses
TEACHER: What is the difference between sentences in right and those in left?
Pupils’ expected answer: There is S at the end of the right words.
TEACHER: Very good! So, what Can we Say?
Pupils: the words at the right are in plural form and at the left in singular form
Teacher: how to form the plural form of a noun?
PUPIL: We form the plural of nouns by adding an “-s” to the singular.
TEACHER: Fantastic! (While writing on the board, the teacher says) In general, we form the plural of
nouns by adding an “-s” to the singular form. But, we have many forms of plural of nouns that I will
summarize through the following chart:
SINGULAR FORM PLURAL FORM
House, car, hen… Houses, cars, hens
Names ending with “-s, -sh, -ch, and –x
e.g.: Bus, brush, match, box Buses, brushes, matches, boxes
Names ending in “-y” preceded by a consonant have
their plural in “-ies”
e.g.: Baby, country Babies, countries
Names ending in “-y” preceded by a vowel have their
plural in “-s”
e.g.: Day, boy
Days, boys
The following nouns form their plural in “-ves”:
Half, shelf, knife, wolf, thief, calf, life, leaf, life, loaf, Halves, shelves, knives, wolves, thieves, calves,
self, wife
Lives, leaves, lives, loaves, selves, wives
Apart from these, nouns ending in “f” take an “s” in the
plural form
Chiefs, roofs
e.g.: Chief; roof
NOTE:
- The nouns, fish, sheep, deer do not take an “-s” in the plural form
- Irregular plurals: man = men; woman = women; foot = feet; tooth = teeth; mouse = mice; child =
children
