Number The Starts
Number The Starts
Lois Lowry's "Number the Stars" is a compelling novel that takes place during the Nazi
occupation of Denmark in the Second World War. The story revolves around ten-year-old
Annemarie Johansen, who embarks on a courageous mission to save her Jewish friend Ellen
Rosen from the clutches of the Nazis. Annemarie's character is one of the most prominent in
the book, exemplifying strength and determination in her efforts to protect Ellen, who sought
refuge in the Johansen household to evade persecution. Kirsti Johansen, Annemarie's younger
sister, features in the book, as does Peter Neilsen, who actively participates in the Danish
resistance and works to safeguard Ellen and other Jews. Mr. and Mrs. Johansen, Annemarie's
parents, also play an instrumental role in the story, overcoming their initial fears to join the
rebellion and help protect Ellen.
The novel delves into significant events such as the evacuation of Danish Jews to Sweden, the
Danish resistance to Nazi forces, and the various challenges that Annemarie and her family
face while defending Ellen. Themes of courage, camaraderie, resilience, and the importance of
combating injustice run throughout the narrative, making it a poignant tale of bravery and
determination amid adversity.
A DIFFERENT END
-"Honor and legacy "
As the Nazi occupation becomes more intense, Annemarie and her companion Ellen become
further entangled in a web of peril and fear. Despite their efforts to assist Danish Jews in
fleeing to Sweden, their condition worsens. They are spotted by Nazi authorities while
attempting to save a group of Jews. Despite their bravery and drive, they are apprehended
and detained in a concentration camp.
Annemarie and Ellen are subjected to horrible conditions and horrific mistreatment in the
camp. Their spirit dwindles and their health progressively deteriorates. However, they retain
their connection and mutual support, seeking solace in one another's company in the midst of
the gloom.
Annemarie and Ellen, sadly, do not survive the concentration camp and perish at the hands of
the Nazis. Their valor and sacrifice will live on in the minds of those who battled for freedom
throughout the Nazi occupation.
Although their story ends tragically, their legacy remains in those who oppose injustice and
honor their memory. Their sacrifice is not forgotten and it serves as a permanent reminder of
the savagery of war and the value of resistance.
