A) Process Description
A-1) Design Philosophy:
The sewage treatment plant is designed to treat domestic waste utilizing extended aeration type of activated sludge process.
The plant capacity is 1200 m3/day (2x600 m3/day) average daily flow.

The plant will mainly comprise of the following steps:

>> Inlet Lifting Station

Submersible pumps to lift raw sewage to plant inlet
>> Inlet Works:
Bar Screen
Grit & Grease trap
>> Balancing Tank
Balancing tank aeration system
Balancing tank pumps
>> Secondary treatment unit
Aeration Tanks
Settling Tanks
>> Tertiary Treatment Unit
Chlorine disinfection
Media Filtration
Backwash
>> Sludge Holding Tank
Aeration system for sludge holding

A-2) Design Conditions:

The size of the secondary & tertiary treatment is based on the average sewage flow. The plant capacity is limited by
the daily organic load or the maximum hydraulic flow which are included in the design data as follows;
Total average daily flow : 1200.0 m3/d
No. of streams: 2.0 Nos.
Average daily flow / stream: 600.0 m3/d
Average hourly flow (AHF) / stream: 25.0 m3/hr
Total peak hourly flow (3xAHF): 150.0 m3/hr
Oil & grease < 50 ppm
Influent BOD5 : 350.0 mg/l
Daily BOD5 Load : 420.0 kg/day
Influent TSS: 800.0 mg/l

Effluent Quality:
Effluent quality after secondary treatment, BOD5/TSS : 20/30 mg/l
Effluent quality after tertiary treatment, BOD5/TSS : 10/10 mg/l

A-3) Process Description:

I) Inlet Works
Raw sewage is discharged to the inlet chamber that is designed to maintain an acceptable approach velocity to the bar screen.
Following the bar screen the sewage gravitates into grit and grease trap of horizontal flow type.
Then the sewage gravitates to the balancing tank.
Inlet chamber has been sized for a retention time of 45 seconds of peak flow that is accepted per Egyptian Code

Bar Screen and its channel has been sized as per Egyptian Code with the following parameters:

Bar Spacing = 25mm

Bar Width = 10mm
Inclination Angle = 45 degree

For calculation details, refer to “Process Design Calculation”, detailed hereinafter

II) Balancing Tank

Balancing tank is used to absorb peak fllow & load conditions.

The balancing tank is sized to hold the difference between peak and average flows for 2 hours, which is equivalent
to 4.4 hours retention of the average flow.
The balancing tank is areated by coarse bubble diffuser system to achieve proper mixing of the inlet raw sewage and to avoid
septic conditions & mal odors.
The same aeration blowers (3 x 980 m3/hr) are used to provide air to balancing tank.
The balancing tank pumps are used to transfer sewage to the plant at the average flow conditions. So the downstream units
(secondary & tertairy treatment units) are not disturbed by peak flow or load.

III) Aeration Tank

From balancing tank the waste water enters two aeration tanks with working capacity of 700 m3 each.
The aeration tanks provide a location where biological treatment of the waste water takes place, in these tanks bacteria,
microorganisms and waste water are mixed, aerated and maintained in suspension by bubbling air by using 3 air blowers
(2 duty + 1 standby) each of capacity 980 m3/hr at 550 mbar head and a group of fine bubble air diffusers.

The air contains the oxygen which is used by the aerobic bacteria in the process of "eating" the organic waste.
Aeration tank parameters including:
The content of the aeration tanks, which require a delicate balance of food & oxygen, are commonly referred
to as the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) or activated sludge.

Organic load is 0.3 kg/m3.d, FM ratio (0.08 g BOD/g MLVSS.d ) and retention time is 28 hours approximately and
all parameters are with range recommended by ECP.
For calculation details, please refer to design calculations given hereinafter.

IV) Setting Tanks

The aerated water from the aeration tanks is then fed into 4 settlement tanks with working capacity dimension
5 mx 5m x 4m overall depth each.
The design of these tanks allows the sludge to separate from the effluent by gravity.
The size and geometry of the settling tanks provide a surface loading of 12 m3/m2/d at average flow and
Which accepted per Egyptian Code. For calculation details, refer to design calcualtion given hereinafter

The sludge settles in the central hopper at the base of the tanks. The returned sludge is sent back to the entrance of
the aeration tank by means of a positive air lift pump system, so as to maintain the correct MLSS value.
Valves are provided to redirect the surplus sludge to the sludge holding tank with working capacity of 91 m3.

X) Chlorine Contact Tank

The clarified effluent from the settlement tanks passes to the chlorine contact tank with working capacity 28m 3
at which the effluent is disinfected by dosing hypochlorite solution.
The Chlorine Contact Tank has been sized for 30 min retention time of the average flow.

XI) Tertiary Pressurized Filters

From the chlorine contact tank, the treated effluent is pressurized by 2 duty + 1 standby filter feed & backwash pumps ,
each of 25 m3/hr at 30 m head to three manually operated sand filters each of 1.8 m diameter for further removal of
suspended solids.
During back wash, all three pumps shall be used to backwash one filter at a time (one filter after the other).

The filter and pumps has been sized to achieve a filtration rate of 9.8 m 3/m2.h when 2 filters are running
& 6.5 m3/m2.h when 3 filters are running which is accepted as per ECP.
For calculation details, refer to design calcualtion given hereinafter.
Backwash waste is return back to balancing tank.

XII) Sludge Holding Tank

Sludge from the settlement tanks is transferred by air lift pumps to the sludge holding tank with working capacity 91m 3
Which is sufficinet for sludge holding for 2.6 days.

The sludge holding tank is areated by coarse bubble diffuser system to achieve proper mixing of the sludge and to avoid
septic conditions & mal odors.

Note:-
The quality of effluent water is based on the design flow rates & the influent water characteristics, in case of any change in
flow rates or the influent water characteristics, the effluent water quality will change.

6 Chlorine Contact Tank

Qav = 50.0 m3/hr
No. of tanks 1.0 No.
R.T. = 20 - 30 min 30.0 min
Chlorination Dose = 7 - 10 mg/L = 10.0 mg/L
Volume of contact tanks "V" = Qp * R.T. = 25.0 m3
Take "L" = 7.6 m
Take D 3.5 m
Then calculated W = 0.9 m
Take W 1.0
Actual volume "V" = 26.6 m3
Actual R.T. = 31.9 min
