WHAT ARE EARTHQUAKES?
Earthquakes are the shaking of
the ground when tectonic plates
move. The Earth is made of
different pieces called tectonic
plates. When these plates move,
it creates an earthquake. Most
earthquakes are minor and can
hardly be felt, but some are big
and cause lot of destruction and
damage to buildings.

HOW ARE THEY MEASURED?
Earthquakes are measured by an
instrument called a seismograph.
A seismograph measures the
intensity of an earthquake. They
look like this:

Building stronger and more reliable
buildings.
Securing heavy items on walls and
floors(ex: shelves, TVs, fridges,
cupboards.).
Hang mirrors and pictures away
from where people sit or gather.
Have an emergency family kit and a
plan to be prepared.

The damages caused by an
earthquake are:
Destruction of buildings and
property.
Deaths of family and friends.
No electricity for a long time.
Can trigger landslides, avalanches,
tsunamis or volcanic eruptions.
