ASSIGNMENT ON PRODUCTIVITY AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT
1. Carbonara Casting produces cast bronze valves on a 10-person assembly line. On a recent day,
160 valves were produced during an 8-hour shift. (3 items x 5 points)
a. What is their
productivity? Formula:
=unit produced/input used
=160 valves/10x 8 hrs shift
=2 valves per labor hour
b. John Goodale, the manager at Carbonara, changed the layout and increased production
to 180 units per 8-hour shift. What is the new labor productivity per labor hour?
Formula:
=unit produced/input used
=180 valves/10x 8 hrs shift
=2.25 valves per labor hour
c. What is the percentage of productivity
increase? Formula:
=2.25-2/2
=0.125 or 12.5%

2. Grumpy John Products makes pizza ovens for commercial use. CEO Grumpy John is contemplating
producing smaller ovens for high school and college kitchens. The activities necessary to build an
experimental model and related data are given in the following table: (5 items x 5 points)
CRASH
NORMAL CRASH TIME NORMAL IMMEDIATE
ACTIVITY COST
TIME (WEEKS) (WEEKS) COST (PHP) PREDECESSOR(S)
(PHP)
A 3 2 1,000 1,600 -
B 2 1 2,000 2,700 -
C 1 1 300 300 -
D 7 3 1,300 1,600 A
E 6 3 850 1,000 B
F 2 1 4,000 5,000 C
G 4 2 1,500 2,000 D, E
H 5 3 2,000 3,000 F, G

a. Draw a Gantt Chart using the normal time.

b. Draw the Activity on node (AON) network.

c. Determine the critical path.

Activity Paths Completion Time Total
A-D-G-H 3+7+4+5 =19
B- E-G-H 2+6+4+5 =17
C-F-H 1+2+5 =8
Therefore, the critical path is A+D+G+H since it has the highest completion time of 19

d. Solve for the slack time per activity.

Activity A B C D E F G H
Slack 0 2 11 0 2 11 0 0
Time

e. Solve for the crash cost per period.

ACTIVITYY CRASH COST
(per period)
A 1,500
B 100
C 0
D 75
E 50
F 1000
G 250
H 500

f. What activities should you crash if James Kimpel wants to reduce the project time to 15
weeks? -ACTIVITY C

3. A renovation of the gift shop at Orlando Amway Center has six (6) activities (in hours). For the
following estimates of a, m, and b, calculate the a) expected time and the b) standard deviation
for each activity: (2 items x 5 points)

ACTIVITY a m b Expected Time Standard Deviation

A 11 15 19 15 1.77/1.78
B 27 31 41 32 5.44
C 18 18 18 18 0
D 8 13 19 13.167 3.361/3.36
E 17 18 20 18.167 0.25
F 16 19 22 19 1
