6.2.4 Insulation Screen (non-metallic) Complied
The insulation screen with a minimum thickness as specified in chapter 5.7 shall be an extruded
layer of black, semi-conducting compound continuously covering the whole surface of the
insulation.
The contact surface between insulation and insulation screen shall be smooth and free from
protrusions. The protrusions at the interface between the insulation and insulation screen shall be
limited to 0.250 mm into the insulation and 0.250 mm into the insulation screen (as required in
HD 605 S3 clause 2.1.10.3 point (b) 3).
The inner surface of the insulation screen shall adhere continuously to the outer surface of the
insulation and shall have no tendency to separate from the insulation due to the effect of bending
during installation, load cycling and short circuit under service conditions.
This insulation screen shall be a cold strippable layer and capable of being removed by hand
without any special tool or applying heat, without impairing the performance of insulation and
leaving no semi-conductive material which cannot be removed readily. When tested, the stripping
force shall be not less than 4 N and not more than 45 N according to IEC 60502-2 (Clause 19.23).
The volume resistivity of the insulating screen material shall not exceed 500 Ωm at 90°C.
The Supplier shall be responsible for all delivery procedures and provisions for storing the 11, 22
or 33KV XLPE-Insulated, Three-Core Underground Cables.
Immediately after tests at the Supplier’s premises, both ends of every length of cable shall be
sealed with heat shrinkable end caps.
All cables on drums shall be seaworthy.
All packing shall be suitable for transport from factories to the port of embarkation, sea/air freight,
and rough handling at the port of destination and movement to and on the Site.
All cables and conductors shall have the inner ends brought out and suitably fixed to the drum to
avoid any damage during handling or pulling operations.
The cables shall be rolled on drums as specified in the technical data sheets. The drums shall also
be suitable for storage in the open air without additional protection by casing or shutters for a
period of at least two years.
All markings wherever applicable shall be legible. Weatherproof tags where used, shall be durable,
securely attached.

material/design. Inscriptions on these plates must coincide with the data given in the respective
documents/drawings.
The drums shall be marked in English as given below:
x ABU DHABI DISTRIBUTION COMPANY or AL AIN DISTRIBUTION COMPANY
x PO NUMBER The drum shall be marked with “ELSEWEDY CABLES 3 X 400

x CONSIGNMENT/DRUM SERIAL NO.ADDC/AADC -UAE Manufacturing Year Meter Marking”
x GROSS WEIGHT
x NET WEIGHT
x SIZE OF DRUM/BOX OR BUNDLE (LENGTH X WIDTH X HEIGHT)
x BRIEF INDICATION OF CONTENT
9.3 Storage Complied.
Each cable drum must be provided with clear instruction regarding storage including, but not limited
to, minimum and maximum temperatures.
Possible exceptions to the present prescriptions, concerning the adoption of technical and/or
manufacturing aspects different from the ones prescribed in the present GS, can be evaluated by
TAQA/ADDC/AADC.
In such a case, TAQA/ADDC/AADC will take into account the opportunity to require additional
tests with regard to the technical/manufacturing proposed solutions. Such exceptions can be
approved by TAQA/ADDC/AADC.

Cable Construction
1. Conductor
Stranded, round and compacted Copper or Aluminium conductors, according
to IEC 60228 - class 2.
2. Conductor Screen
An extruded layer of semi conducting material applied over the conductor as
voltage stress control layer.
3. Insulation
An extruded layer of cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) is applied over the inner semi
conductor with thickness as specified in IEC 60502.
4. Insulation Screen
An extruded layer of strippable or firmly bonded to the insulation. Conductor screen,
XLPE insulation and insulation screen are applied at the same time using triple head
extruder.
5. Metallic Screen
a. Copper Tape: an annealed Copper tape is applied helically with a suitable
overlap.
b. Copper Wire: helically applied and binded with a Copper tape to achieve
electrical contact
6. Assembly
In case of three core cables, cores are assembled together with suitable lay length,
non-hygroscopic filler is applied during assembly to fill spaces between cores then
wrapped with suitable binder tape.
7. Bedding
in case of armoured cables an extruded layer of PVC or MDPE or LLDPE is applied
as bedding.
8. Armouring
a. Steel Tape: double layers of steel tapes are applied helically.
b. Steel Wire: galvanized steel wires are applied helically.
9. Sheath
An extruded layer of PVC is applied with thickness as specified in IEC 60502.
Option
Lead Sheath: Upon request a layer of lead is extruded over the bedding layer.
