Mathematics 7
Quarter 2 Week 2

Lesson/Topic: Units of Length, Mass and Weight, Volume and Capacity, and Time
Competency: The learner solves problems involving length, mass, weight, volume, capacity and time.
Lesson Objective/s:
(1) Identify the length, mass, weight, volume, capacity and time.
(2) Solve the problem using area and perimeter
(3) apply in real life situation.

Key Concept

Units of Length
Changing One Metric Unit to Another
In changing one metric unit to another, you multiply or divide the number by multiples of ten
(10), or simply move the decimal of the number either to the left or to the right. To start with the conversion,
devise first a number line having the basic units of length arranged in a specific order (i.e., decreasing from left
to right).

Problem Solving Involving Area and Perimeter

The fundamental units of length relate with problems involving perimeter and area. Perimeter
is the distance around polygon or plane figure, and area is the surface within a particular boundary.
Plane figure Perimeter Area
Triangle P=a+b+c 1
A = bh
2
Rectangle P = 2l + 2w A = lw
Square P = 4s A = s2
Trapezoid P=a+b+c+d a+b
A= h
2
Rhombus P = 4s pq
A=
2
Parallelogram P = 2(a + b) A = bh

Units of mass and weight

- Mass refers to the amount of matter in an object without considering location, whereas weight refers to
the mass subjected to gravitational attraction.

Metric ton 1000 kg
Kilogram (kg) 1000 g
Hectogram (hg) 100 g

Dekagram (dag) 10 g
Gram (g) 1g
Decigram (dg) 0.1 g
Centigram (cg) 0.01 g
Milligram (mg) 0.001 g

Units of Volume and Capacity

- Volume is the amount of space occupied by an object. Capacity is the amount of substance a container
can hold.
Changing measures of volume from one metric unit to another
Unit Relation to gram
Kiloliter (kL) 1000 L
Hectoliter (hL) 100 L
Dekaliter (daL) 10 L
Liter (L) 1L
Deciliter (dL) 0.1 L
Centiliter (cL) 0.01 L
Milliliter (mL) 0.001 L

Units of Time
- The second is used as the standard unit of time. Clocks and calendars are tools for indicating time. The
two commonly used clocks are 12-hour and 24-hour clocks.
Conversion
1 minute 60 seconds
1 hour 60 minutes
1 day 24 hours
1 week 7 days
1 month 30 days
1 year 12 months = 365 days = 52 weeks
1 leap year 366 days
1 decade 10 years
1 score 20 years
1 century 100 years
1 millennium 1000 years

Activity 1:

Solve the folloring problems. Show your solutions completely.

1. One of the pieces of information needed by alfred in filling out a form is his height in meters.
If his heights is 168 cm, what is his height in meters?
2. Lyndon would like to put a fence for his rectangular lot with dimensions of 17 m by 12 m.
How long should the fence be?
3. Jomil has a restaurant with dimensions of 15 m long by 12 m wide. He would like to place
square tiles on the restaurant floor. Each side of the tile is 30 cm lon. If each tile costs 35
pesos, how much would he spend in putting tiles?

Activity 2: SOLVE THE PROBLEM

1. Andrei buys 0.42 kg of candies that costs Php3.00 for each gram. How much will Andrei pay
for the candies?
2. Jordan bought gifts for his family during his trip abroad and put them in a balikbayan box. He
remembered that each passenger is allowed 15kg for the check-in baggage, and that excess
baggage is charged Php168.00 per kilogram. If his personal things weigh 9kg and the box
weighs 17kg, how much would he pay in excess of the allowed?
3. Ben uses a wheelbarrow to deliver 85 boxes of soap, but the wheelbarrow can only transport
25 kilograms at the most. If each box weighs 750 grams, how many trips does ben have to
make to deliver all the boxes?

Activity 3: Matchmaking

Convert the following measures as indicated:

1. 875 daL= ___________kL 6. 0.00012 daL= ___________mL
