Many people believe that social networking sites (such as Facebook) have had a huge
negative impact on both individuals and society. To what extent do you agree?
It is widely believed that social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) are a
menace for both individuals and society, but I partly disagree. Although social media do have
cons, they also have a great positive impact.
As mentioned above, social media have had negative effects on people and society. To begin
with, social media is proven to have many negative effects on both physical and mental
health. These social networking sites are designed to be addictive. When people are addicted
to them, they are likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, unhealthy sleep patterns, and
many more. Moreover, On many sites such as Facebook or YouTube, there are things like the
spread of fake news, online bullying, and much more. As a result, those factors have created
many toxic and harmful communities on the Internet.
On the other hand, it is undeniable social networking sites also bring huge benefits. One of
the most significant impacts of social media has been the way it has revolutionized
communication. Thanks to group chats and video calls, now people can make friends and
build relationships much faster and easier, as social media also breaks the barrier of
geographic isolation. Social media has also transformed the way people consume media. In
the past, people relied on traditional media channels such as newspapers and television to
stay informed. Today, social media has become a primary source of news and information for
many people.
In conclusion, Despite having negative effects, social networking sites have had a huge
positive impact, which I believe can outweigh the cons.
