THE CORRELATION BETWEEN LISTENING HABIT TO ENGLISH SONGS AND

VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE SECOND YEAR ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM

STUDENTS FKIP UNIVERSITAS RIAU

INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Research Background
Language is the source of communication. There are many languages in the world.
Every country has its own national language. Globally, English is the most widely used
language, in every country English has become a mandatory subject that must be studied.
English is frequently referred to as a universal language where the importance of English
cannot be ignored because the language is widely used everywhere. Within excess of 350
million individuals all over the planet communicating in English as a first language and in
excess of 430 million talking it as a subsequent language, there are English speakers in
most nations all over the planet (Aziza, 2020).
In English, students must acquire the four language skills of listening, reading,
speaking, and writing to learn. English also has elements like pronunciation, grammar,
vocabulary, and so on. All of the skills and parts are connected. Therefore, students will
acquire the skills and components necessary for effective communication while learning
English as stated by Kusuma Dewi & Sukarni (2020). One of the skills that can assist
students in learning is listening. Babita Tyagi (2013), say that listening is a language
modality. It includes a functioning association of a person. In listening, there is a sender,
a message, and a receiver. It is the psychological process of responding to spoken or
nonverbal messages, attending to their construction of meaning, and receiving them.
Russel and Russel in Hasyuni (2006:8) also state that listening skill is listening with
comprehension, attention, and appreciation. Then, listening activity needs incorporating
ability of language, such as pronunciation, vocabulary mastery, writing, speaking and
reading. There are some difficulties for students in learning listening: having trouble with
sounds, needing to understand every word, needing to hear more than once, not good to
fast responding, and get exhausted (Endah Sari, n.d.).
One of important components in learning listening is vocabulary. Vocabulary is a
heart of the language. Vocabulary refers to the collection of words that a person, a group,
or a language possesses and uses. Krashen and Terrel (1985) say that vocabulary is the
most basic form of communication. Students will have difficulty in voicing comprehension
and making sentences if they don’t have enough words to produce (Nurmala Sari &
Aminatun, 2021).Therefore, no matter how fluent a person speaks, good at pronunciation
and other language components, without vocabulary mastery the communication will not
be able to run smoothly. (Ma’rifat, 2017)
Looking at the current situation, many people cannot be separated from a song.
Listening to the songs has become a habit for children, teenagers, adults, even old people.
We can hear song playback anywhere, in cars, in malls, restaurants and cafes, at sports
venues, and various other places. Listening to the songs involves more than just hearing
the lyrics and melodies. It is about understanding the meaning, emotions, stories, and
intentions conveyed by the artist through their lyrics.
Based on the words in the lyrics of a song, we can assume that it can be a learning
medium for students to master vocabulary. We can not speak, write or even understand
what we listen if we do not master the vocabulary. We can say that someone who is
proficient in pronunciation, understands grammatical sentences, can perform orally, is
someone who has mastered vocabulary.
In regards to English vocabulary, Schoepp (2001) say that since songs have been
essential for people language encounters, it tends to be an extraordinary worth in the event
that it is composed with language lesson. He explains that song can be used in English
language teaching for three reasons: affective, cognitive, and linguistic. First, from the
affective, students' positive attitude toward the language is influenced by the use of song,
which lowers their affective filter. It can happen because songs have a fun melody and
charming. Then, from cognitive, songs assist students with creating automaticity. Students'
language development is aided by the repetitive and consistent nature of music. The last is
according to linguistic perspective. Song is important for encouraging language learning
because it provides learners with authentic material.
Considering the importance of vocabulary mastery in English learning and the habit
of listening to the songs as explained above, the writer decided to study the correlation
between these two. With the second year students of the English study program FKIP
University of Riau as the subjects, the writer try to investigate whether the listening habit
to English songs correlates with their vocabulary mastery or not.
1.2 The Formulation of the Problem
