Research Design

According to this article, It defines qualitative research as an iterative process in which the scientific
community gains a better knowledge of the topic under study by generating new meaningful distinctions
as they get closer to it. This formulation is intended to serve as a tool for improving research designs
while emphasizing that a qualitative dimension can also be found in quantitative work. Furthermore, it
can improve teaching and researcher communication, close the gap between qualitative and quantitative
researchers, answer critics of qualitative methodologies, and serve as a standard for evaluating
qualitative research.

Qualitative research is a type of research that investigates and provides deeper insights into real-world
problems. Unlike quantitative research, which collects numerical data points and intervenes or
introduces treatments, qualitative research generates hypotheses while also further investigating and
understanding quantitative data. Qualitative research collects data about individuals' experiences,
perceptions, and behaviours. It addresses the how’s and why’s rather than how many or how much. It
could be structured as a stand-alone study, relying solely on qualitative data, or as part of mixed-
methods research that includes qualitative and quantitative data.

The relevance of qualitative research on this study was we need to do a face to face interview to find out
their thoughts and to express their opinion related to the research topic. In this interview, It will be close
ended conversation between researchers and participants related to the particular subject is still the
preferred mode of communication. These following factors will be related to our qualitative research.
First, face-to-face interviews are an appropriate tool for gathering small amount of data. Second, it
provided a feasible framework for gathering a small sample of composing groups; and third, face to face
interview have high data reliability.

This study's design will be based on purposive sampling technique, where data will be gathered to meet
the study's objectives. The research is based on the study of factors that influence grade 10 students in
choosing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics strand as their senior high school track at
gateway integrated school. The choice of purposive sampling technique as opposed to other research
designs was motivated by the following factors, first, face to face interview provides for a suitable
instrument for collecting a small amount of data. Secondly, it provided a practical framework for
collecting a small sample of composing groups and thirdly, survey studies have strong data reliability.

The following factors influenced the decision to use face to face interview over other research
methodologies. First, face-to-face interviews are an appropriate tool for gathering smalll amount of data.
Second, it provided a feasible framework for gathering a small sample of composing groups; and third,
survey research have high data reliability.
