3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 General Requirements
1) Materials subjected to flame resistance treatment shall have excellent durability
and shall not deteriorate flame resistance under manufacturing process(e.g. steam
treatment during seat installation) or due to fatigue(e.g. repeated compression of
seat).
2) Products shall be free from defects that might affect their performance after flame
resistance treatment.
They shall also conform to the parts and materials specifications.
4.TEST METHODS
4.1 Preparing of Specimens
Prepare or manufacture 5 specimens in accordance with the following methods.
1) When possible to take specified dimension
Width 100 mm and length 350 mm
Thickness shall be that of finished products
But, if the thickness of finished products exceeds 12 mm, cut uniformly to 12 mm
thick.
2) When impossible to take specified dimension
(1) If specimen surface is not plane, cut specimens from areas taking the smallest
bending.
if so, the thickness shall not exceed 12 mm in any place.
But, in case materials made of two-imposed layers of different composition which
are made composite materials within a depth of 12 mm from the surface whether or
not adhere, prepare specimens in according with the following methods.
ⅰ) In case of adhering whole surface(Fig. 1)
When two adhered materials are not separated, prepare specimens in adhered
state within a depth of 12 mm from the surface of the parts.
ⅱ) In case of adhering not whole surface(Fig. 1)
Separate only materials in the surface of the occupant compartment air
surface and prepare specimens from separated materials, in addition cut
specimens from adhering surface to a depth of 12 mm.
But, when the different two-imposed materials adhere within a depth of 12 mm
again, prepare specimens the same as ⅰ)
Fig 1.
〈Explain of figure〉
ⅰ) Material A has a non-adhering interface with material B and is tested
separately.
ⅱ) Part of materials B and C adheres at every point of contact ; therefore B
and C are tested as a composite. The cut is in material C as shown, to make
a specimen 12 mm thickness.
(2) When maximum obtainable dimensions in width and length are less than specified
dimensions, cut specimens to dimensions as large as possible
This case, minimum dimensions of specimens is 25 mm width and 293 mm length.
(3) When specimens are not possible to obtain a flat specimen because of surface
curvature, cut specimens from the material manufactured through the same
process as the finished products. The thickness of specimens shall be that of
plain part of finished parts.
3) Direction
When materials are anisotropic or have different burning rate, cut five
specimens respectively.
4) Surface
When materials contain napped or tufted-type surface, the specimens shall be
placed on a flat surface and combed twice against the nap by a comb with 7 to 8
teeth per 25 mm.
4.2 Test Apparatus and Test Condition
1) Flammability test apparatus
The test apparatus shall meet KS B 9152-1978(Test method for Flammability of
Organic Interior Materials for Automobiles) or have equivalent ability.
But, the dimension and accuracy of apparatus shall conform to Fig 2.
2) Test condition
(1) Specimen
Specimens shall be tested after conditioning under each of the following
conditions.
·Room temperature : Allow to stand at temperature 16 ∼ 21 ℃ and relative
humidity 55±5 % for 24 h or more.
·Aged : Allow to stand at 80±3 ℃ for 168 h.
(2) Laboratory
Laboratory condition shall be at temperature 16 ∼ 21 ℃ and relative humidity
55±5 %
3) U-shaped frame
The test specimen is inserted between two matching U-shaped frames(Fig. 3) defined
to KS B 9152.
But, when specimen is difficult to remain horizontal due to softening and sagging
on burning or their width and length are less than specifications, place a metal
net defined to KS B 9152 under the specimen. In this case the front edge of
specimen places a opening U-shaped frame mouth and when the width is less than
defined specimen, place the specimen in the center of the U-shaped frame by means
of a metal net.
4) Others
(1) U-shaped frame shall be marked in 38 mm distance from opening its mouth and 254
mm distance from that place.
(2) Bunsen burner with a nozzle of 9.5±0.5 mm inside diameter shall be used.
(3) The gas supplied to the bunsen burner shall principally use natural gas having a
total calorific value 35,000 ∼ 38,000 kj/m3(8,361 ∼ 9,078 kcal/m3).
And, it is possible to use liquid petroleum gas(LP gas) having equivalent total
calorific value same as natural gas or more.
4.3 Test Procedure
Test in accordance with following methods.
1) Mount the front edge of specimens between opening U-shaped frame mouth.
But, the specimen is oriented so that the exposed side will be downward to the
frame.
2) Place mounted specimen in a horizontal position and in case installing bunsen
burner in test cabinet, it is located in the test cabinet so that the center of its
nozzle is 19 mm below the center of the bottom edge of the open end of the
specimen(Fig. 5).
5. CALCULATION
The burning rate is given by the formula.
D Where B : Burning rate(mm/min)
B = 60 × D : Length the flame travel(mm)
T T : Time for flame to travel(seconds)
6. EVALUATION
6.1 Definition of Flammability
1) The material that does not support combustion during or following the 15 seconds
ignition period is called " Non burning"
2) The material that ignites on either surface but the flame extinguishes itself
before reaching the scribed line A or has not burned more than 50 mm and stops
burning before it has burned for 60 seconds beyond the scribed line A is called "
Self extinguishing"
