How do I fulfil the requirements to become a Graduand?

Turning of the Tassel


When the graduates of all three faculties have been presented to the Chancellor and
have returned to their seats, the Registrar will ask that they stand and move the tassel
on the mortarboard from the right to the left. Once this is completed, you will be
instructed to take your seat.

When do the Graduates recess?


When the Chancellor ends the ceremony, everyone stands and remains standing as
the Chancellor's Procession, the Academic Procession, and specially invited guests
recess. Graduates should follow the instructions of the Marshals/Ushers.

WHAT DO I DO IF I ARRIVE LATE


(i.e. AFTER THE PROCESSION OF THE GRADUANDS)?
You report to the Student Services Desk and remain there until you are escorted to the
ceremony by a designated staff member.

HOW SHOULD I DRESS FOR THE GRADUATION CEREMONY?


The required regalia for presentation to the Chancellor are the black gown, hood in the
colour of the faculty and the mortarboard, the tassel of which is to be on the right.
Dress Code – Ladies
Ladies are advised to wear modest apparel (a dress or skirt suit), which should be knee
length and complemented by stockings of an appropriate colour and black shoes.
Pants are not allowed.
Dress Code – Gentlemen
Gentlemen should be attired appropriate necktie and shoes

GRADUATE SCHOOL STUDENTS – Ladies - must wear White Dresses


Men - wear White Shirts

Please be aware that the University College can choose not to present you to the
Chancellor if you're not dressed appropriately. Inappropriate attire includes very low-
cut necklines exposing cleavages and/or those attired in garb which exposes the mid
areas of the body including navel and/or those wearing any form of head gear. Such
persons will not be presented.
