ELA Summative Assessment

Learning objective: Students will describe their understanding of narrative structure by

writing a recount of the story “The Story of the Leprechaun” by providing details of events,
characters, and settings in fluent and error free.

Describe the summative assessment: Students will take their graphic organizer that they
worked on day 1 of the lesson after the read aloud, they will take lined paper and with the
help of their graphic organizer they will create a recount of the story “The Story of the
Leprechaun”. Each student will need to include points from the story about events,
characters, and setting. They will need to include key details from the beginning, middle and
end of the story. Each student will need to write 3 complete sentences with details, correct
spellings, and correct grammar and punctuation.

Rationale for why assessment is aligned with learning objective: This assessment aligns with
the learning objective because first students are to show their understanding of narrative
structure, they will be describing events at the beginning middle and end. Students are asked
to write about characters, setting, and events in detail and the learning objective asks for that.
They will be able to expand on just one idea. The rubrics criterion is also focused on
including those details about setting, characters. Lastly students are asked to write error free
with a focus on their grammar and punctuation. Using upper case letters, lower case, correct
spacing, and having their writing make sense.

Describe scoring guide, include it and the one you may differentiate: The scoring guide is
broken into 3 sections each totaling 4 points they can earn. The 1st section of the rubric is
based on the narrative structure, The second section is about character, setting, and detail.
They will earn all 3 points if they include details about all 3 sections and ideas and they align
with the story structure. The 3rd section is based on correct grammar, spelling, and
spacing. To earn all 3 points in this section, they need to have correct grammar. THis would
include punctuation, correct spacing, and correct upper/lower case letters.

I would not want to differentiate because I would like to see all students writing and grade
them at the same level.
