The Gadarenes

Mark 5:1-3 KJVR And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of
the Gadarenes. (2) And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him
out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, (3) Who had his dwelling among the
tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

Re-arrange

Jesus crossed over the Sea of Galilee to the land of the Gadarenes.

The apostles, I am sure, were not fully aware of why they were crossing; only that Jesus
said they were to go, so they went.

Immediately, he was met by two things.

One was a man, the other a spirit.

The man:

Mark 5:2-4 KJVR And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him
out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, (3) Who had his dwelling among the
tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: (4) Because that he had been
often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him,
and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

This man was living in the place of the dead.

Attempted to bind with chains – no luck.

It was the man who came screaming for help. Let’s examine closely the response of the
spirit.

The spirit argued with Jesus – with God

Mark 5:6-10 KJVR But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshiped him, (7) And
cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the
most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. (8) For he said unto
him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. (9) And he asked him, What is thy
name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. (10) And he
besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

Demons desired to stay exactly where they were. Why?

1
Mark 5:16-17 KJVR And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was
possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. (17) And they began to pray
him to depart out of their coasts.

Mark 5:18-19 KJVR And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed
with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. (19) Howbeit Jesus suffered him
not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord
hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

Understand anointing

Exodus 30:22-32 KJVR Moreover the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, (23) Take thou
also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet
cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two
hundred and fifty shekels, (24) And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of
the sanctuary, and of oil olive a hin: (25) And thou shalt make it an oil of holy
ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be a holy
anointing oil. (26) And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith,
and the ark of the testimony, (27) And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick
and his vessels, and the altar of incense, (28) And the altar of burnt offering with all his
vessels, and the laver and his foot. (29) And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be
most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. (30) And thou shalt anoint Aaron
and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.
(31) And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be a holy
anointing oil unto me throughout your generations. (32) Upon man's flesh shall it not
be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy,
and it shall be holy unto you.

It is God that anoints, and he anoints spirit and only God can anoint.

We can choose some positions, others are for God alone.

Look at the latter end of the man.

Mark 5:15-16 KJVR And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the
devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were
afraid. (16) And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with
the devil, and also concerning the swine.

Where did the clothing come from?

Now the man comes again.

Mark 5:18-20 KJVR And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed
with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. (19) Howbeit Jesus suffered him
not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord
hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. (20) And he departed, and began
to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did
marvel.

Anointing and anointed.

1 Corinthians 10:21-22 KJVR Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils:
ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. (22) Do we
provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

1 Corinthians 11:27-30 KJVR Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this
cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. (28) But
let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. (29)
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself,
not discerning the Lord's body. (30) For this cause many are weak and sickly among
you, and many sleep.
