Machine tool

maintenance
 The maintenance of machine tools is
accomplished in accordance with a planned
maintenance system (PMS).
 This system provides for complex measures for
servicing, inspection, and repairs of equipment,
which prevent the wear of equipment and help
to keep it in good order.
The PMS system
The PMS system includes:
(1) Routine servicing, which provides for normal
everyday running of machines, minor repairs
and, whenever necessary, adjustment of
separate units or members of the machine
tool.
(2) Periodic inspections, which are conducted
according to schedule and involve visual
inspection, cleaning, and accuracy checks.
Inspections consist in exterior checks
accompanied by partial disassembly. Following
activities are done during inspection:
◼ All the mechanisms are checked in operation and
regulated, fasteners are repaired or replaced, the
state and wear of the machine tool as a whole and its
individual units are assessed.
◼ The inspection results are recorded in a report on the
mechanical condition of the machine.
◼ The date for the next repairs is defined in accordance
with this report.
◼ The accuracy check of the machine tool is conducted
according to approved standards.
(3) Scheduled repairs, which are divided into
◼ minor (or routine),
◼ medium, and
◼ general repairs.
In minor/routine repairs, separate components
or units of the machine are repaired or
replaced without thorough disassembly of the
machine.
Medium repairs include all the elements of
routine repairs with the additional restoration of
the relative position of the principal units and
with partial repairs to basic components.
General overhaul involves the complete
replacement or repairs of all the basic
components, full restoration of the relative
position of the principal units and the required
accuracy of the machine tool.
The most widely used PMS system for machine
tools features the following maintenance cycle:
G-I-R-I-R-I-M-I-R-I-R-I-M-I-R-IR-I-G,

 where
 G indicates general overhaul, I - inspection,
 R –routine repair, M – medium repair.

 The cycle includes 9 inspections, 6 routine repairs, 2

medium repairs and 2 general overhauls.
