INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

Internship is a work experience for a limited period of time in any kind of

organizations majorly offered to the Students. Most of the Educational Organizations
want the student to undergo training in a Company for a limited time period before
qualification in their own specialization.

This ultimately helps the student to know the office atmosphere and also the
team work and how it works before ultimately getting placed or go for work. An
internship consists of an exchange of services for experience between the intern and
the organization. Internships are normally used to determine whether the intern still
has an interest in that field after the real-life experience.

In addition, an internship can be used to build a professional network that can

assist with letters of recommendation or lead to future employment opportunities. The
benefit of bringing an intern into full-time employment is that they are already familiar
with the company, therefore needing little to no training and also the Intern has a very
good knowledge about the Culture, Visions, Missions and Ultimately the Rules of the
Company.

An internship can be paid, unpaid, or partially paid (in the form of a stipend).
Internships may be part-time or full-time and are usually flexible with students'
schedules. A typical internship lasts between one and four months, but can be shorter
or longer, depending on the organization involved. The act of job shadowing may also
constitute interning.

Internships provide current college students with the ability to participate in a

field of their choice to receive hands-on learning about a particular future career,
preparing them for full-time work following graduation which can help the student to
choose his career path perfectly.

CHAPTER- II
INTERNSHIP LEARNING

6
2.1 Logistics And Supply Chain:

Logistics is the process of moving, storing and distributing goods from when they’re first
produced to their final delivery. This is a key part of the entire supply chain management process. It
focuses closely on developing strategies to streamline, coordinate and manage the supply chain
management process to ensure products are transported and delivered in a smooth, cost-effective and
efficient way.

2.2 Freight Forwarding:

Freight forwarders are the one agencies or individuals that manage the transportation
of merchandise from the point of production through the final point of distribution. These agencies
act as a third-party intermediary between producers and carriers, ensuring a producer’s goods get
where they need to be, when they need to be there.

2.3 Incoterms:

These are pre-defined international commercial terms published by international chamber of

commerce. These are the common terms used all over the world. These incoterms are classified into
two terms they are cash collect and prepaid method. Under cash collect method there are two terms
they are EXW (EX-Works) and FOB (Free On Board). And the other terms are prepaid. They are
DDP (Delivery Duty Paid), CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight), FAS (Free Along-side Ship), CIP
(Cost and Insurance Paid), DAT (Deliver at Terminal), DAP (Delivery At Place), FCA (Free Carrier).

2.4Master Airway Bill (MAWB):

An Airway Bill is a document, which is the proof of receipt of goods from the shipper and
issued by the air carrier. An Airway Bill is the most important document issued by a carrier, directly
or via any of its agents. It is a non-negotiable transport document that covers the transport of cargo
from airport to airport. The major functions of an Airway Bill are, Contract of Carriage, Evidence of
receipt of goods, Freight bill, Certificate of insurance, Customs declaration. Whereas a Master
Airway Bill (MAWB) is described as the one issued by the main carrier of goods on receipt of goods
7
that too from a freight forwarder to deliver at a destination based on agreed terms and conditions.
Thus, it is a contract of carriage between a forwarder and a carrier.

2.5 Housing Airway Bill (HAWB):

The main role for HAWB (House Airway Bill) is played by the presence or absence of a
freight forwarder or consolidator when transporting a shipment from one airport to another. In the
event of such participation, it is their responsibility to issue this particular document upon receipt of
the goods. You can also find it somewhere under the name of the forwarding bill of the “house of the
forwarder” – in fact it is a contract of carriage between the forwarder and the carrier.

2.6 Unit Loading Device (ULD):

A unit load device (ULD) is a container used to load luggage, freight, and mail on wide-
body aircraft and specific narrow-body aircraft. It allows preloading of cargo, confidence the
containerised load will fit in the aircraft and efficient planning of aircraft weight and balance and
reduced labour and time in loading aircraft holds compared with 'bulk-loading' single items of cargo
or luggage by hand. Each ULD has its own packing list or manifest so that its contents can be tracked.
A loaded aircraft cargo pallet secured with a cargo net also forms a ULD, but its load must be gauged
for size in addition to being weighed to ensure aircraft door and hold clearance.

2.7 Bill of Lading:

This is a document that acts as a contract between a shipper and carrier. The BOL\AWB
contains important details such as the description of what is being shipped as well as details of the
consignee and the dispatcher. Official shipping document containing details about the shipment. The
release of this document to the intended recipient of goods is representative of transfer of ownership,
so it is often held until final payment is complete. The original paper B\L or electronic release is
required for the delivery.

8
2.8 Packing List:

A packing list is a document used in international trade. It provides the exporter,

international freight forwarder, and ultimate consignee with information about the shipment,
including how it's packed, the dimensions and weight of each package, and the marks and numbers
that are noted on the outside of the boxes.

2.9 Export General Manifest:

The (EGM) Export General Manifest is one such liability that rests upon the carrier. As
a part of customs clearance formalities, the person in charge of the shipping vessel or aircraft has to
furnish the details of the consignment loaded into the vessel or aircraft in a prescribed form. This
form is known as the Export General Manifest. An EGM is filed before the departure of the carrier
and is considered to be the proof of shipment and export. In the case of vehicular transportation, a
report similar to an EGM is required to be furnished, which is known as an Export Report.

2.10 Cross country movements:

It Also known as triangular operations or intermediation, cross trade shipments occur when cargo is
shipped from one country to another without passing through the country that the shipper’s business
has been registered in. They are generally coordinated electronically with the help of specialist freight
forwarding companies to manage the logistics.

flight and rolled over to the next flight. This usually happens only if the calculation is
wrong or any other reason where it becomes necessary to off load it.

2.15 Break Point Rule

at 2hich weight they want to specify as Chargeable weight. Even though the weights
normally will be the same weight, there are some situations where when it exceeds a
certain limit the rates lower. Thus using this rule the company calculates the best rate
decree and use them as the Chargeable Weight.

14
WORK EXPERIENCE

2.23 Introduction

Work experience is the experience an employee gains while working in a job or

an Internship in any particular field. These are the works which are assigned to the person
while they are in the organization

2.24 Preparing of Master Air way Bill

Master Air way bill is a major document involved in the transportation of cargo
through air lines. Master air way contains all the information regarding the details of the
cargo the various specification of the cargo, the master air way bill number, the shipper
and the consignee address, the IATA code of the shipper and the incoterms and the mode
of payment are specified in the Master air way bill. This document is the first step in send
the cargo through Air lines.

This is booked through the airline website where using the IATA code of every
agency that are registered with the IATA. Before the booking of the master air way bill,
the pricing team of our department conforms the buying rate by contacting the airline and
quoting the selling price to the customer by adding a small amount of margin. The amount
of margin added depends based on the customer previous transactions and their
relationship with the organization.

After quoting the price and getting an approval of the price, we receive all the
information regarding the specification of the cargo which is supposed to be shipped to
the Destination. Then we log in to the airline website (the airline is declared based on the
country which the cargo is going and the availability of the airline, the cost involved and
the time by which the cargo is supposed to reach the destination) using the IATA code
and the password which we already registered with the airline

15
2.25 Calculation of Rates

Rates refers to the cost of the cost at which the airline agrees to ship the cargo to
the specified destination. Rates are normally the most important part of the business and
this could even decide the longing of the business and the customer relationships. The
Logistics business is one of the business which has a high amount of profitability margin
when you compare with the buying a selling rates.

But the more discounts you provide to a customer than the competitors the more
he will come back for another business with us. Thus we make sure that the rates are
quoted in a way that is profitable for both the business and the customers. The rates in
the organization are mostly fixed by the pricing team which operates separately from the
other teams.

Their main job role is to conform with various airline at what buying rate are they
willing to provide us and fixing what would be the amount of discount. The pricing team
has various contacts in various airline through which they conform the process either by
call or through official email. Then the customer transaction are verified and then the
prices are fixed for the airlines.

This is only for the air way transaction the other various transactions are also billed
based on the customer interests and quotation is sent to the customer for their approval.

16
Once they has sent the approval the customer is specified to one of the employees in the
specific team and they will take over from there on. There are also general tariff rates
which are common rate which we compare to arrive at the final discounted rate.

2.26 Tracking a Load or Cargo

Tracking a load or cargo is one of the most important concepts in building

customer relationships with the customers. When a load is departed from the specified
flight from the specified airport, tracking of the cargo is important until it reaches the
destination at the mentioned point. If in case of any problem it would be easier to solve
it if we finds it as soon as possible. The most happening scenario is that when the cargo
is offloaded, then there by providing pressure to the airport it is easily filled up rather
than finding it later and we are in a big problem. Every airline has their own tracking
system but the easier way to track a load is using the
https://www.trackload.com/tracking.php website which when entered the airway bill
number finds the airline login into it and gives you the tracking data.

17
2.27 Preparing a Master bill of Lading

Master bill of lading is the same as the master air way bill but this is created for
the sea way transportation of the cargo. This document has all the details that are available
in the master air way bill also. The master bill of lading has all the details like the shipper
address, consignee address, the port of loading and the port of discharge, the cargo, the
packaging of the cargo and the method of payment.

It also an easy method for any shipping transportation that happens around the world
currently.

This master bill of lading is the important document to the sea way transportation from
the origin to destination. This is also prepared through the same way by calling the sea
line getting the rate and then providing a quotation to the customer. Later applying through
the website of the shipping and preparing master bill of lading.

2.28 Visit to the Port

During the period of the Internship we had a chance to visit the Port of Chennai.
Here we had a practical exposure of how the cargo are entering the port through CFS (It
is explained in the next part) into the port and how they are boarded into the ship. We saw
how the containers are loaded into the ships basically the mother and feeder vessels.

We also saw how the break bulk cargo is loaded into the ship and also how the flat
rack cargo are loaded into the ships. This gave a very good practical idea of how to create
the various bill of lading and which cargo can go into which vessel.

18
2.29 Visit to the CONTAINER FREIGHT STATION (CFS)

Container Freight Station or the CFS is a place under the customs authority
which does all the work relating to the clearance of their customs duty and the proper
identification and approval of documents. The CFS is a place in outskirts of a city
where the container are entered and the documents are verified for the imports. After
entering into the CFS in the goods are once checked by the customs authority in from
of either the shipper or the CHA and then sealed. For the exports the customs
authorities come and verify it with the Cha or customer in from and when it cleared
the dipper can take the container at any time.

19
CHAPTER- III
INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES AND CONCLUSION

20
SUGGESTION AND CONCLUSION

3.1 INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES.

3.1.1 PUNCTUALITY
Maintaining the office hour and to be there or on time and submitting the
project on time improves punctuality. In Logistic it is very important to submit the document on
time to export the cargo which help us to know the importance of time. This internship taught me
the importance of time management.

3.1.2 COMMUNICATION SKILLS

The first basic skill I learned during the one month internship is
communication. During the whole internship period I was having a high practical exposure with
various people varying from both employees in the company as well as various people from
important parts which is very essential for the growth of the logistics company. Mostly we are
not allowed to speak with customers but other than that everything was very good and I learn the
lot about logistic after working as an intern here.

3.1.3 PROBLEM SOLVING

There will be many problems that all organisation are facing in the business
world they have first day without losing their position. we were given few situations and to solve
them which improves the way or of tackling those problems.

3.1.4 CRITICAL THINKING

Solving problems through observing every detail and analysis the situations
carefully is a skill every employer looks for an intern. The ability to look at the situation from all
possible angles and understand how to solve it shows the employer that you are a productive
problem solver. Critical thinking is all about doing the right thing at the right time. During my
21
internship I was given a task of managing a project all on my own and I messed it up on the
grandest scale. I did not understand my role getting the work done because I am not thought of it
critically. But, like they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

3.1.5 OUICK LEARNING

The skill of catching up fast is definitely comes in handy, especially

during my internship. As internship is an short time one you should be very quick in learning new
things. At this quick learning skills will help you in learning everything in short period of time.

3.1.6 SELF DISCIPLINE

The most successful intense are those discipline enough meet project
deadlines without constant reminders and who can sometime even determine their own task and
work schedule. This expressly true in a virtual assignment; even an in- office internship, however
requires self imposed focus and determination. In my internship discipline I request self-discipline
skill to learn about logistic because the way you are discipline incharge can teach easily and he
can know about easily.

3.1.7 TEAM WORK

Team work gives as many idea and different perspective to solve the
problems. It is always better to go with a team work which gives you a support and to gather idea.
In my internship we have 22 students work together as a one team and achieved many targets.
3.1.8 MULTI-TASKING

Multi-tasking one of the Other skills I accure during the internship to stop
during a day more than 5 to 6 customers come for the shipment of cargo and thus a lot of customers
are allotted to the Employees daily. Even though we did not get the customer allotted there are

22
time where we were provided with jobs based on the multitasking. .We did a lot of track load sheet
and other works simultaneously which helps in acquiring and improving this skills.

3.2 SUGGESTION AND CONCLUSION

3.2.1 SUGGESTION
It was an amazing 1 month of experience in internship in freyer, I loved every bit of
time I worked there. But my only suggestion is may be we can gone through to various places like
seaport or airports because our topic is fully based on this things.so if it was practical things it was
easy for us to learn.

3.2.2 CONCLUSION
During this one month I learned many things about logistics, airfreight, seafreight
and many things involved in it. And this internship gives me an wide area to think about my goals
towards logistics. My internship at logistics is worth the world to me since it gives me practical
experience in logistics.
These diverse facets collectively contribute to a holistic professional growth, preparing
me for the multifaceted challenges and opportunities in the evolving professional landscape. I am
grateful for the transformative experiences and look forward to applying these insights in my future
endeavours.
Generally, I can say that this internship would not only solidify my academic
background but also re-ignite a fire within me for pursuing a career in logistics where I intend to
contribute towards effective and efficient supply chains within the global market place.
