Assignment No.

1. A two-element rectangular rosette was used to determine the two principal stresses at
a point as shown in Figure. If the stresses are p1 = 200 N/mm2 and p2 = 75 N/mm2,
find the stresses σxx, σyy , and τxy when α = 30°.

2. The following observations are made with a rectangular rosette mounted on a steel
specimen

εA = 800 µm/m
εB = –100 µm/m
εC = –900 µm/m as shown in Figure.
Determine the principal strains, principal stresses, and principal angles ϕ1 and ϕ2 with
respect to x-axis.
For steel E = 200 kN/mm2; v = 0.3

3. The following observations were made with a delta rosette mounted on an aluminium
specimen
εA = 800 µcm/cm
εB = 400 µcm/cm
εC = 0 µcm/cm.
Determine principal strains, principal stresses, and principal angles if for aluminium
E = 680 × 102 N/mm2, v = 0.33.
4. Following readings were recorded through a four-element rectangular rosette mounted
on an aluminium specimen. If the measurements are accurate, determine principal
strains.

ε A = −600 µm/m
ε B = +100 µm/m
ε C = +200 µm/m
ε D = −500 µm/m

5. For a Tee-delta rosette, the following data are recorded from the four-gauge element.
Comment on the validity of the data. (as shown in Figure).
εA = +500 µm/m εB = +50 µm/m εC = +150 µm/m εD = +300 µm/m
6. A two-element rectangular rosette was used to determine the two principal stresses at
a point. If principal stresses are p 1 = 120 N/mm2 and p 2 = –60 N/mm2, find stresses
σxx, σyy, and τxy if a = 20° in Figure

7. The following observations were made with a rectangular rosette mounted on an

aluminium specimen.
εA = −170 µm/m
εB = +70 µm/m
εC = +70 µm/m
Determine the principal strains, the principal stresses.
For aluminium, E = 68 kN/mm2, v = 0.33.

8. The following observations were made with a delta rosette mounted on a steel
specimen.
εA = 400 µm/m
εB = –200 µm/m
εC = +200 µm/m
Determine principal strains, principal stresses, and principal angles.
For steel E = 210 kN/mm2, v = 0.3.

following observations are made
εA = 300 µm/m
εB=200 µm/m
εC=600 µm/m
εD=700 µm/m
Determine principal strains and principal stresses.
For aluminium E = 68 kN/mm2, v = 0.33.

10. For a Tee-Delta rosette the following data are recorded from the four-gauge elements.

εA =200 µm/m
εB =+150 µm/m
εC =+250 µm/m
εD = −400 µm/m
