Submitted by: Lady Nicole Sta. Maria

ARCH 41S5
Quezon City

1. Characteristics of Quezon City’s urban design:

Urban design is the design of towns and cities, streets and spaces. It is the collaborative and
multi-disciplinary process of shaping the physical setting for life – the art of making places.
Urban design involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes,
and establishing frameworks and procedures that will deliver successful development by
different people over time.

Quezon City is one of the highly urbanized cities in the Philippines. Economic dynamism,
government efficiency, infrastructure, and resiliency make QC a highly urbanized city but
what about its architecture?
Quezon City’s urban planning & design was started by Manuel Quezon together with Harry
T. Frost, Juan Arellano and other architects. Began with QC’s memorial circle, architectural
halls to its modern architectural buildings as time goes by.
Nature parks/ green spaces, the skyscrapers, housing that connects with the community
contributes to QC’s urban design & planning.

2. What can I improve with QC’s urban design considering the fact that Quezon City is
the largest and most populous city in Metro Manila - The city covers an area of 62.20
square miles.

 Mode of transportation – the traffic congestions, improve the design of MRT & LRT
stations
 Renovate informal settlers’ houses with the help of the government – Quezon City’s
Housing Community Development and Resettlement Department
 Meet sustainability goals – preserve the untouched properties e.g., an area in UP
Diliman
 Nature parks and green spaces
