Pongo and His Uncle Talema

For the rest of the day, Pongo and his uncle Talema hunted monkeys with bows and arrows. By
evening, they had plenty of skins and were able to start repairing and enlarging their tents.

As the following day passed, heavy rains fell and there were terrifying storms. Lightning flashed and
thunder roared. Trees were struck and some fell down, burnt or stood with bare leafless branches
stretching towards the sky. Talema and Pongo would no longer sleep comfortably. Water poured into
their tent and often they had to hold up the roof for part of the night to stop it from collapsing.

On the next day they had to spend many hours of the day in one of the tents as it was too wet to
wonder around outside. They wanted meat, but had to do with fruit and nuts. At last the heavy rains
turned to showers. Uncle Talema and Pongo went out hunting again each day. They soon filled their
bags with meat of the animals they killed.

Giraffes

Giraffes live in Africa, on places called savannas. They live in places where there are trees with
leaves that they can eat. Giraffes have short bodies and long, skinny legs. Their front legs are a little
longer than their back legs. Males are usually taller than females.

Giraffes can run as fast as 35 miles per hour. They have fur that has a pattern of brown patches. Some
patches look like stepping stones from a path. Lighter coloured lines separate the patches. The colour
and pattern of their fur helps giraffes blend in with trees and leaves. It helps them to hide from lions.

Giraffes have a line of longer fur along their necks. They have a tail with a long bunch of fur at the
end. Giraffes use their tails to hit flies and other insects that land on them. They have two short horns
covered with skin on their heads. A male’s horns are bigger than a female’s horns.

Toads

Toads are small animals that exist in most parts of the world. They are tailless amphibians distributed
nearly worldwide. Toads are similar to frogs, but they have dry warty skin and, except for breeding in
water, lives mostly on land.
Frogs, close relatives of toads, have powerful back legs and can jump long distances. However, toads
crawl as they have four short legs of the same size. Most toads have rough bumps or warts on their
skin. Some toads are over 25 centimetres long, like frogs but usually cannot move as fast as frogs can.

The warts on a toad’s skin hold a poisonous liquid that helps protect the toad from its enemies. If
