DATE:- 13 -- 02 – 2023.
THIS CHAPTER PROVIDES AN INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEM
An electric power system is defined as a network of electrical components
used to supply, generate, transmit, and consume electric power. An electric
power system that supplies power to homes and industries for a sizeable region is
called an electric grid. Electric grids can be divided into three-layered complex
interconnected networks consisting of generation, transmission, and distribution
components. An electric grid also contains control software and associated
equipment to transmit electricity from the place of generation to residential,
industrial, or commercial users. This is achieved by transporting electrical power
from generation buses to distribution substations through transmission buses
interconnected by transmission lines.

Distribution of Electrical Energy) & Elements of Distribution System Diagram.

First, the electricity is produced at the power-producing station then it
transferred to the grid substation and stepped up with the help of a step-up
transformer. After that, the electricity is transferred to the main sub-station to
step-down by step-down transfer. The power finally entered to the house by
passing and again stepping down through the city sub-station. The step-down
voltage of power that finally comes to the house is 220V.

Substation provides the energy supply for the local area in which the line is
located. The main function of the substation is to collect the energy transmitted
at high voltage from the generating station and then reduce the voltage to an
appropriate value for local distribution and gives facilities for switching. The
substation is of two types one is the simple switching type where the different
connection between transmission line are made and the other is the converting
stations which convert AC to DC or vice versa or convert frequency from higher to
lower or lower to higher.

CONCLUSION

1. Design of 11/0.415 kV substation at 60% load requirement is achieved.

2. 75% previous loading of the transformer including future expansion was
achieved.
3. Previous loading of 75% which will cater for 2hrs overloading is achieved
thus long operational life of the transformer and cheapness in overall
maintenance cost.
4. The common tripping of HV fuse when a transformer is overloaded is
avoided in HV side in this work.
5. The protection of the transformer and all other elements are achieved.
6. The lightning arresting system is adequate to discharge surge current safely
into the ground.
