●They follow detrimental interactions
(both the organisms are not getting
benefited from such a form of interaction)
Plants offer pollen for pollinators and juicy fruits for dispersers
Plant animal interactions often involve co evolution
of the mutualists
Evolutions of the flower and its pollinator
species are tightly linked with one another
Many species of fig trees, there is a tight one to
one relationship with the pollinator species of
wasp
Fig species can be pollinated only by its partner
wasp species and no other species
The female wasp uses the fruit not only as an
ovipostion site but uses the developing seeds
within the fruit for nourishing it's larvae
The wasp pollinated the fig inflorescence while
searching for suitable egg laying sites
In return for the favour of pollination the fig
offers the wasp some of its developing seeds, as
food for the developing larvae .
Orchids exhibit a wide range of flower designs,
which have evolved to attract specific
pollinating insects.
The Mediterranean orchid Ophrys employs
sexual decepton to trick a specific kind of bee
into pollinating it.
The flower of Ophrys resembles the female bee
in size, color, and pattern, enticing the male bee.
The male bee pseudocopulates with the flower,
transferring pollen in the process.
Pollination occurs when the same bee
pseudocopulates with another flower,
transferring pollen to it.
This interaction exemplifies co-evolution
between the orchid and the bee.
Any alteration in the female bee's color patterns
during evolution can reduce pollination success,
unless the orchid co-evolves to maintain
similarity with the female bee's appearance.
