WOMEN IN JAPAN ARE SPEAKING UP ABOUT NOT BEING
ALLOWED TO WEAR GLASSES AT WORK
The hashtag #GlassesAreForbidden was very popular on Twitter over
the weekend after Japanese media exposed businesses that
prohibited female workers from wearing eyeglasses in Japan.

“Ms A”, an anonymous twenty-something department store receptionist, says her boss told her “glasses are
5 prohibited.” She works forty hours a week, and commutes1 about 4 hours each day, which means she has to
wear contact lenses for about sixty hours each week, despite her poor vision. Wearing contact lenses
causes dryness and eye fatigue and there are often mornings when she just thinks to herself “I wish I could
wear glasses.”

Another woman, “Ms B”, said that her company’s dress code clearly states glasses are prohibited. She
10 works as a nurse in a beauty clinic and also struggles with her vision. “Many of my colleagues keep eye
drops2 in their pockets and use them while working. Some of them even had laser surgery.”

This unfortunately isn’t the first time Japanese businesses have reportedly imposed rules or dress codes
that apply only to women in the workplace. Earlier this year, in response to women also being forced to wear
high heels to work, the #KuToo movement was started and a petition was created. It received over 31,000
15 signatures in support of women being able to choose what type of footwear they wear in the workplace.

Women (or anyone, for that matter) should never have to struggle with their vision or be forced to wear
something that makes them uncomfortable in the workplace.
