1. BACKGROUND

Introduction
Construction Technology and Management is an important application of science, which plays
a major role in the social and economic development of modern society. In order to perform
this role effectively, construction engineers require a broad understanding of scientific
principles, knowledge of materials, applied knowledge of civil engineering and the capacity to
analyse and synthesise in order to arrive at solutions. This requires research, team working,
and leadership and business skills. And it has to be situated in a social, economic and
environmental context that reflects the reality within which the construction engineer and
manager finds him/herself.
In Ethiopia, Construction Technology and Management has great role to play in supporting
economic development and contribute towards the improvement of the living standard of the
people. This role and contribution input is at different geospatial scales, from the Federal to the
local, in both an urban and a rural context. As a country that is moving into a rapid phase of
growth, the contribution that construction technology and management can make, to ensure
that this growth is sustainable; is a particularly important one. It is therefore of vital
importance that construction technologists and managers are prepared, professionally, to met
this growth challenge and contribute to sustainable development.

2. Rationale for the program

The double digit economic growth and the consecutive rapid expansion of construction
industry in Ethiopia results in high demand for having professionals on the field of
construction technology and management.Mainly the gaps seen in construction engineering,
construction management, and construction technology become clear on the execution of
construction projects. Inefficiencies in construction projects management, inadequacies in the
adoptions of various construction technologies and techniques, etc call for having an
integrated profession beyond the design aspect at the all phases of project life cycle (inception,
planning, execution...). Moreover the expansion of infrastructure, the rapid urbanization, the
transformation to industry, etc require more effective and efficient construction professionals
that are able to operate beyond the design and engineering aspects.

3. Objectives of the B.Sc. Program

The Objective of this B.Sc. program is to produce outstanding construction technology and
management graduates who have been prepared to become technological, managerial and
public service leaders capable of understanding the social and environmental challenges that
face the country, and who will be in a position to make a meaningful contribution to both
national social and economic growth and development as well as being able to respond to, and
benefit from, the impact of global change. The departement and the staff are committed to
creating a learning environment that provides a level of knowledge and competency in these
areas, through an innovative program of study, supported by a capability in information
technology use, coupled with a capacity to integrate the key social and environmental issues
facing the country.
This program is aimed primarily at training managing engineers required for managing
constructing projects with efficient and effective management system, Administer contracts,
Conduct researches to identify real problems on site pertaining to construction management,
methods & materials, and find better solutions
It will produce well qualified managing engineers knowledgeable in construction engineering
areas of structural, geotechnical and highway engineering, at the sometime those graduates
will also have extensive knowledge of construction technology and project management skills,
and can be actively engaged in the planning, development and management of

3
construction/infrastructure projects. Managing Engineer’s competencies can be summarized as

8. Program Profile
Admission Requirements
Admissions to all regular undergraduate programs are processed through the Ministry of
Education (MoE) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. This is currently true for all
public Higher Education Institutes across the whole nation. Admissions to the continuing
education program (CEP) are processed through the registrar office based on the criteria set by
respective University.

Admission to Regular Program

Students who have successfully completed the 10 plus 2 preparatory education and have
secured a minimum cut-off point with high scores in Physics and Mathematics are eligible to
join the regular undergraduate B.Sc. degree program of Construction Technology and
Management.
Depending on available spaces, diploma graduates from TVET (Technical Vocational
Education and Training) in the fields of construction technology will be admitted based on
grades on competitive basis.
Applicants with a minimum cut-off point and with high scores in Physics and Mathematics in
foreign countries examinations equivalent to the 10+2 preparatory program are also eligible.
The equivalence is determined by the department.

Admission to Continuing Education Program

The criteria set for admission to the regular program will be employed as the criteria for
admission to the continuing education program.
Candidates who are diploma graduates from an engineering faculty, TVET or similar
recognized college in the fields of civil engineering, construction technology and other related
fields with a minimum cut-off point will be admitted based on space availability, and
competitive basis.
Limited numbers of junior staff such as technical assistants in relevant field may be admitted
each year based on non-competitive basis provided that he/she:
7
 has served the University for a minimum of 2 consecutive years;
 meet the minimum admission requirement set for the program;
 obtain letter of recommendation from the business and development vice
president;
 Signs undertaking to serve the University after graduation, at least two years of
service for one complete year of study.
Department Placement
After successful completion of the orientation semester (1st semester), students will choose
academic departments according to their desired field of study. In view of the high number of
applicants, admission to any department is usually on competitive basis based on academic
performance. 30% of the total available places shall be reserved for females in addition to
their right to compete in the 70% places.

Duration of the study

The BSc. Program of construction technology and management takes five years of duration.
Each year’s constitute two semesters, the respective activities are mentioned below.

Module Number 16
Rationale and On the construction site there are certain tasks to be managed which
objective of the are grouped here in this module into three courses. Performance
module appraisal process is an opportunity to strengthen the performance of
construction employees to manage, and formalizes the
communication process used therein. Supervision of site works
continually as a daily process enable the construction project to
maintain its pace to complete the project, quality, workmanship,
heavy equipments and plant management and clear-cut progress of
the scheduled tasks. There are issues related to the labor law and the
relationship of labor with their employer. All these three main areas
of site management are considered as courses in this module.

Module Name Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering

Module Number 18
Rationale and Engineering properties of soils form a basic input to the salient design of
objective of the foundations upon which dams, bridges, and buildings rest. An in-depth
module treatment of these properties assists practicing engineers to base their design
on scientific basis.
This module is designed to introduce CoTM students to the properties and
behavior of soil as an engineering material and their application in the
solution of certain civil engineering problems such as compressibility of soil,
seepage, retaining walls and stability of slopes. Moreover, the module is
designed to introduce civil engineering students to the experimental
determination of the properties and behavior of soils and their application in
the solution of certain civil engineering problems.
After the completion the student will Evaluate the state of stress in a soil
mass, Calculate seepage volume through a soil mass, Estimate settlement
magnitude of compressible soils, Evaluate lateral earth pressures on retaining
walls, Perform slope stability analysis, Analyze and design shallow
foundations by comparing capacity with load demands, Design retaining
walls by considering axial, sliding, and overturning loads, Fundamentals of

Module Name Construction Site Management

Module Number CoTM-M3231
Rationale and On the construction site there are certain tasks to be managed which are
objective of the grouped here in this module into three courses. Performance appraisal
module process is an opportunity to strengthen the performance of construction
employees to manage, and formalizes the communication process used
therein. Supervision of site works continually as a daily process enable the
construction project to maintain its pace to complete the project, quality,
workmanship and clear-cut progress of the scheduled tasks. There are issues
related to the assurance of safety and health to be offered to the construction
workers who have to work in greater elevations, in higher degree of risk with
respect to the heaviness of equipments, tools, volume of work etc. Students
on Bsc level have to be involved in an innovative “Quality Thinking” as they
will be the trail blazers in Change and Improvement in their professional life.
All these three main areas of site management are considered as courses in
this module.
