Handbook -Mirror / Lacquered Glass fixing with 3M Mirror Mount Tape
This handbook describes procedure to be followed for fixing of mirrors and glasses on walls
using 3M tape. Normally this type of applications are done for Entrance halls, Club house,
Gymnasium etc. where mirrors and glass fixing is specified in arch dwg. This hand book
should be referred along with other relevant arch dwgs, approved specifications and latest
circulars.
A) Following are the Important Points to be taken Care off
1. Mirror / Lacquered Glass Dimension to be submitted and approval for 3M tape calculation
should be taken from QA dept. in advance. After approval, same to be circulated down the
line till contractor.
2. 3M Mirror Mount Tape is used for fixing Mirrors, Tinted Mirrors and Lacquered Glass
having 6mm thickness only.
3. For fixing Clear Glass, the Mirror Mount Tape cannot be used, Special 3M VHB
Structural Glazing Tape is used for this type of Glass, which should be highlighted
by all concerned.
4. It is very important to check the manufacturing date of Tape and Brand i.e. Mirror Mount
mentioned on the Packet of Tape, since by mistake a contractor may bring other Type of
3 M Tape which are available in Market , Please refer below image showing correct brand
of Mirror Mount Tape.

5. While taking measurement of Mirror on site, Sufficient Gap should be considered between
edges of Two Mirrors and between Mirror edge and Dado Marble, this is required to take
care of expansion and avoid cracking of mirror after fixing.

6. If the room is air conditioned, Dow Corning 896 Silicon sealant to be applied on the
periphery of mirror to avoid any condensation of water behind the mirror and thus to avoid
rusting of same as well as decay of plywood on which mirror is fixed.
7. Mirrors should not be fixed in ceiling; instead of Mirror Naman Steel

( SS Steel )sheet should be fixed. If any dwg shows mirror on ceiling,
than same to be brought to the notice of all concerned before going
ahead with works

8. For safety, always use gloves while handling the Mirror.
9. Never install mirrors on freshly painted plywood surface, minimum 12 hours gap should be
maintained for drying of Paint and Tape application.
10. Mirrors should be one of the last items installed in new construction after final cleanup.
11. Secondly , if there is air bubble in tape due to non uniform pressure during application,
same should be removed by piercing the tape at that location.
12. The mirror should not be disturbed for half an hour to 4 hours.
13. The full curing of 3M Tape will take around 72 hours.
14. Don’t use the tape in pieces, but use all along the periphery to give a continuous bond.
15. One Mirror fixing demonstration will be carried out in the presence of QA representative.
16. Please refer below Table showing example of 3M Tape Calculation for different sizes of
Mirror. Basically there are three sizes of 3M tape. 12mm, 18mm and 24mm.

17. Concerned site engineer should submit following details in advance of 3M tape length
calculations.
a- Size of mirror/ Glass

b- Type of material ie. Mirror or glass.
c- Dwg showing arrangement of mirror in elevation.
Correct length of tape is worked out based on above details. Very large size mirrors should
be avoided.

 Tape width: 12 mm / 18 mm/ 24 mm.

B) Material Required and Purpose
 3M Mirror Mount tape : adhesive Tape for fixing Mirror on Plywood having Wood Primer +
One coat Enamel Paint application done .
 3M 94 Primer : Bonding agent for bonding between Tape with Plywood and Tape and
Mirror
 Clinical spirit (IPA – Iso Propyl alcohol) & piece of cotton: For cleaning dust deposited on
the Plywood surface and Back side of Mirror surface.

C) Surface Preparation
 Surface preparation is a basic requirement to ensure proper adhesive contact with the
surface.
 Plywood surface must be in level and same should be checked by aluminum tube.
 After leveling of plywood surface, one coat of approved wood primer & one coat of
approved enamel paint should be applied.

D) Step by Step Procedure
1) Marking to be done on plywood for fixing of 3M tape as per approved calculations and
sketch.
2) Picture showing cleaning the plywood surface where tape is coming, with I.P.A. (Iso Propyl
Alcohol) + water (50 + 50 %) by clean cotton waste.
3) After drying of (2 to 3 minutes) I.P.A. cleaning , to be done ,with 3M 94 Primer applied over
cleaned surface of plywood by clean cotton waste.

4) Same process of cleaning by I.P.A. & applying of 3M 94 Primer done on plywood is

repeated over mirror, where tape is coming.
5) 3M tape over plywood surface is fixed as per calculation (Normally it is 9 sq. inch / kg of
mirror) 5mm away from mirror periphery edge & leave 25mm gap for air circulation, as
seen in picture.

6) After fixing of tape, press tape surface firmly before removing of liner.

9) Press the mirror after fixing the same by hand.

E) Do’s and Don’ts
1) Please note that contractor must use only size of tape specified in calculations. In case if
that particular size is not available, than contractor must revert back with available tape
size so that necessary revision can be carried out in tape calculations for use on site.
2) If there is any offset in plywood, than same to b first rectified before starting mirror fixing.
3) Spacing of screws for fixing plywood to be first checked and same to be as per
specification given in tender.
4) Without any application of paint, mirror fixing should not commence.
5) In case if cleaner supplied with tape is not sufficient, than contractor must arrange for
additional cleaner sufficient for works.
6) Before starting mirror fixing, length and width of area where mirror is coming to be re
checked for any diff. and to be matched with mirror sizes arrived on site.
