Topic:Study of community based approaches to housing design and


construction during earlier times in kerala.
Research question : What are the socio-cultural dynamics and outcomes
associated with community based approaches to housing design and
construction in various Kerala housing typologies,and how they contribute
to sustainable and culturally sensitive development?

Main objective and sub objective of the study

Main objective : To understand how the effects of society and culture have
on the housing typologies of Kerala during earlier times,thereby studying
about sustainability and climate responsive design through the use of
various vernacular techniques.
Sub objective : A study on the community is to be done to analyse their
local activity patterns and customs,leading to shaping a housing typology
based on the socio-cultural impacts.

Variables

Architectural Features: This variable includes the specific design elements


of traditional Kerala housing, such as the layout of the house, the use of
courtyards, verandas, and the arrangement of rooms.
Construction Materials: This variable refers to the materials used in
building traditional Kerala houses, such as wood, bamboo, thatch, clay, and
laterite stones. The availability, durability, and sustainability of these
materials could be studied.
Construction Techniques: This variable encompasses the methods and
techniques used in constructing traditional Kerala houses, including timber
framing, thatching, mud plastering, and stone masonry.
