GRADE 10 SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS

WEEK 12
LESSON # 1
TOPIC: Measurement
SUB-TOPIC: Scale Drawing
OBJECTIVE:
Students will:
 use scale drawings to determine/ calculate distance and areas
CONTENT:
Definition of Scale Drawing
A scale drawing is a drawing where the dimensions are proportional to the actual size of the
object being drawn in a predetermined ratio.
The scale is a ratio of the size of the drawing to the size of the original object being drawn.
This may be referred to as a scale ratio.
For example, if the scale is 1 cm : 3 cm, then the length of 1 cm in the drawing represents 3 cm
in true size (or original size).
The term scale factor is the ratio of a measurement of the drawing compared to
the corresponding measurement of the original figure.
A scale factor is a number used as a multiplier in scaling.
Example: A sidewalk 20 feet long is drawn on a map as 4 inches in length.

The scale factor of 1/60 tells us that the map is 1/60 times the size of the actual sidewalk.

If the scale factor is < 1, the created object is smaller. (reduce)

If the scale factor is > 1, the created object is larger. (enlarge)

64
Remember that the scale factor is the number you multiply
times the initial object's measurements to get the new, created object.
Scale drawings are used in a variety of fields: art, cartooning, design, advertising,
construction, architecture, floor plans, mapping, geography, landscape, cellular
biology, geometry, physics, astronomy, engineering, chemistry, aerospace,
archaeology, and the list goes on.

Example:
The length of the bridge is 500 miles. If 1 inch represents 25 miles, what is the length of the
bridge?
Solution:
Step 1: Divide 500 by 25 to determine the number of units
= 500/25 = 20 units
Step 2: Take the units and multiply by the scale.
Step 3: 20(1) = 20 inches
Step 4: The answer is: 20 inches

EXERCISE
1. The length of the road is 600 miles. If 1 inch represents 30 miles, what is the length of the
road?
2. Dimensions of a box are 500 feet by 225 feet. If 1 inch represents 25 feet, what are the
dimensions of the box on the drawing?
3. The area of a cricket pitch is 90 m2. On a map the area of the pitch is 0.9 cm2
(a) What is the area of the cricket pitch in cm2?
(b) Calculate the ratio of the areas given.
4. A scale of 1:40 was used to make a scale drawing of a rectangular room.
(a) The dimensions of the scale drawing of the room are 9cm by 6cm. What is the actual area
of the room in cm2?
(b) The area of the scale drawing of the room: The actual area of the room =?
