REPORT ON FIRE INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED ON
MONDAY 20TH MARCH, 2023 AT ARUA CLLOGE IN BOYS’
DORMITORY IN ARUA TO THE HEADTEACHER BY MR.
OYIRWOTH ROBERT.
Executive summary;
A report on fire incident that occurred on Monday 20th March, 2023 at Arua
college in the boys’ dormitory in Arua to the head teacher by Oyirwoth Robert.
On Monday 20th March, 2023 at around 10:30pm, a case of smoke from the main
switch box was reported to me as the teacher on duty by the dormitory captain
from the boys’ wing when doing roll call in the girls’ wing with their matron.
Rushing to the scene and upon instigation an active fire was confirmed and the fire
alarm was activated as we tried putting out using the available fire extinguisher but
we failed. With the help of the girls’ matron, the dormitory leaders, the watchman
and the members from the nearby community we then swiftly evacuated all the
learners to a secure location then called the fire fighters to put out the fire who
arrived within 10 minutes and within the next four hours the fire was brought
under control by the firefighters.
Thanks to God almighty that none of the students and the community members got
harmed in the incident though the entire dormitory together with the students’
belongings and 300 beds got completely damaged in the fire.
Following this incident, I would like to recommend that; the worn out wirings
should be immediately replaced and checked at regular intervals for leakages;
installation of more fire extinguishers in all the students’ dormitory; proper fuse
must be installed to avoid the excess flow of current; to avert the occurrence of
such incident in future and thereby great loss to property and human can be
prevented.
Introduction;
In the evening hours of Monday 20th March, 2023 at around 10:30pm, unforeseen
emergency unfolded within the premise of Arua college, Arua. A fire broke out in
the boys’ dormitory calling for immediate action. As the teacher on duty, with the
help of the girls’ matron, the dormitory leaders, the watchman and the members
from nearby community responded to the fire alarm and coordinated efforts to
mitigate the situation and safely evacuated all the learners to a secure location.

2
The aim of this report is to provide a comprehensive overview of the entire
incident detailing the response actions taken, the cause of the fire, the extent of
damage and recommendations for the future prevention.
Terms of reference;
This report was commissioned by the head teacher, Arua College to me on 21 st
March, 2023 for duration of two days up to 23rd March, 2023.
Findings;
Discovery of the fire;
The dormitory captain reported to the smoke that was coming from main switch
box in the boys’ dormitory to me at around 10:30pm as the teacher on duty on the
ground when we were taking roll call in the girls’ wing with their matron.
We responded quickly and rushed to the scene on which upon investigation, an
active fire was confirmed.
Response actions;
The fire alarm was activated as we tried putting out using the available fire
extinguisher but we failed. As the teacher on duty, with the help of the girls’
matron, the dormitory leaders, the watchman and the members from the nearby
community who had heard the fire alarm, we swiftly and safely evacuated all the
students in the dormitory to a secure location. I then immediately called the
firefighters to put out the fire.
The locals tried to put out the fire using the available fire extinguishers and sand
buckets but their effort was of no use as the fire escalated very fast. Two fire-
engines from the nearby police station arrived within 10 minutes and for the next
four hours, tried their best to put out the fire.
Due to the presence of flammable things like mattresses, clothing and the oil paint
on the dormitory walls, the fire spread quite fast and after struggling for four hours,
the firefighters finally brought the fire under control without anyone getting
injured.
Extent of damage;
Fortunately all the students were safely evacuated with no causality to secure
location and no one else was injured during the incident.

3
The entire boys’ dormitory was completely damaged including the students’
belongings with all their scholastic materials and 300 beds were all damaged by the
fire.
Cause of the fire;
Preliminary investigation by the police officers reported that the fire was caused by
electrical short circuit in the main switch box in the dormitory. As all the fittings in
the dormitory were in operation and given the flammable things in the dormitory,
the fire chanced to spread very fast.
Conclusion;
The fire was reported by the dormitory captain and upon realization of the fire
outbreak, all the students were swiftly evacuated to a secure location and the fire
was brought under control by the firefighters.
Fortunately none of the student was harmed by the fire though their belongings and
300 beds were completely damaged including the entire dormitory.
The fire was found to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in the main
switch box in the dormitory.
Recommendations;
In order to avert or overcome the incident in future, the following precautions are
recommended.
The worn out wirings should be immediately replaced and checked at regular
intervals for leakages.
It is extremely necessary to install more fire extinguishers in all the students’
dormitory.
Proper fuse must be installed to avoid the excess flow of current.
The walls of the dormitories should be painted with water paints instead of oil
paints.
Students should be trained to handle the electric components safely along with fire
extinguishers.
Students should be made familiar with evacuation procedures in case of any
emergency.

4
More smoke detectors and fire alarms should be installed in the dormitories and
classrooms.
If the above measures are implemented forthwith, such accidents can be prevented
in future and thereby great loss to property and human can be averted.
