“Darnell’s Vice”

By Dylan Mallet

Scene 1.
EXT. A QUIET, PUBLIC WOODLAND MARSH AREA – MIDNIGHT
A vast treeline sits at the top of a hill, distant streetlights and
busy roads can be seen on the horizon. The bright red brake lights
of a car illuminate the top of some kind of hill, slowly the sound
of digging and grunting grows louder as the camera starts to push in
over the horizon of the hill.
DARNELL (V/O)
You need to dig quickly and efficiently if you want to
get away with hiding a body.
A shot of his eyes as he stands up straight and peers around,
grunting and panting frequently.
The spot you do it in really doesn’t matter as long as
it’s nowhere the victim used to like to go to, police can
get that information somewhere. Drive out, 30-40 mins and
pick some place quiet, but public. Then you dig 7-8 feet
deep, everybody in movies says 5-6 feet will do it but
once again, the police, (chuckles) they’ll know to dig
that deep; THAT’S… why you dig deeper.
He completes his dig and is seen patting his shovel on the soil and
then opening a bag of grass seed and scattering it over the soily
dig site. He then walks back to his car, pops the boot and puts his
shovel, gloves and grass seed into the back. He stands at the boot
of his car checking his surroundings.
Ya’ know, you gather just enough knowledge on how the
feds do their job and you can just about outsmart them.
Or at least, I’ve been able to so far.
The camera slowly zooms in on his face until his dialogue comes to
an end and he steps back and slams the boot shut. Distant train
sounds can be heard in the background.
Crepuscolo Sul Mare, by Piero Umiliani PLAYS
~OPENING CREDITS~
A montage of shots of his eyes in the rear-view mirror, constantly
checking the road behind him. His face lit by the passing red, green
and amber lights of the streets. Shots of out-of-focus streetlights
are shown as the car passes them. Shots of him gripping the steering
wheel and his foot pressing down on the accelerator. A shot of the
shovel in the backseat with the streetlights highlighting it as the
car passes them.

EXT: DARNELL’S APARTMENT BUILDING – MIDNIGHT
The car slowly rolls into shot, the breaks squeak and Darnell parks
up outside his apartment building.

INT: DARNELL’S APARTMENT -MIDNIGHT
Darnell walks into his apartment and closes the door behind him, the
apartment is dimly lit with lights under his kitchen cupboards as
well as small lamps dotted across the apartment. Darnel takes a deep
breath and looks around his apartment with a subtle smirk on his
face. He walks over to his record player, selects a record and
places it on the turntable, the record starts to spin and we see the
pin drop onto it. The crackle of the record starts up. Darnel walks
into the centre of the living room, from a side on view we watch him
block a lamp and become sort of a silhouette.
Unchain My Heart by Trini Lopez PLAYS
~TITLE SCREEN~
Darnel starts to do a sort of slow, awkward boogie in his living
room. He rotates his arms and briefly nods his head to the beat of
the music with a genuine smile across his face. All of this, only an
hour after disposing of one of his victims, showing him as the true
psychopath that he is.
Scene 2.
EXT. A SCHOOL YARD WITH A PLAYGROUND AND A LARGE CONECNTING FIELD -
MIDDAY
~TEXT~
‘2016’
Push in shots of an empty children’s school playground and an open
field next to it, a close up shot of a school bell and a crowd of
kids running out into the playground.
DARNELL (V/O)
You know how people experiment with drugs and alcohol
when they’re young and naïve, teenagers going to parties
with crates of beer they bought with a fake ID and
sitting round in a circle lighting up joints? I never did
any of that stuff, not a joint, a beer, a cigarette. I’m
clean as a whistle.
Kids run across the shot chasing each other and laughing playing
with spacer hoppers and paper fortune tellers.
Have been my whole life. But my interest for all of my…
pass times, started at the young age of thirteen.
We hear eerie whale noise sounds PLAY.
A young Darnell and his friend walk into shot in school uniform,
white collared shirts, black trousers, black dress shoes and one of
them wears a plain black V-neck jumper. As they approach the centre
of the field another boy runs into Darnell and laughs before getting
up trying to run off. Young Darnell turns around, angry.
YOUNG DANELL
Hey!
KID #1
What?
YOUNG DARNELL
Come back here and say sorry!
KID 1#
Why should I? What are you gonna do Darnell?
Young Darnell walks over to the kid and pushes him, the kid pushes
him back. Darnell becomes furious, he then punches the kid hard in
the face and gives him a nose bleed. Darnell looks at the blood
trickling from his nose, and an exhilarated expression shoots across
his face.
The whale noises return and intensify.
So, still grinning at his opponent, this time even harder, and the
kid drops to the ground unconscious. Darnell stares down at his
opponent’s unconscious body, marvelled by it. He looks down with joy
in his eyes.
DARNELL (V/O)
I didn’t need any to abuse any substance, I didn’t need
any of that stuff, I had this. The only buzz I’d ever
need. The adrenaline, the rush that candy red colour.
(deep breath in) Sensational.

EXT. IN THE WOODS – DAY

Young Darnell playing in the woods searching for birds and small
animals with a bat trying to hurt or kill them. Footage of Darnell
seeing something running around under the leaves and missing it with
his bat.
DARNELL (V/O)
From that day, I chased that buzz. Hunting small animals
that hurried about the woods. Mice, common lizards and
frogs, hard to catch but worth it for that feeling. Or so
I thought.
Darnell eventually catches something and kills it, he stares at the
lifeless body of a mouse and feels nothing.
Small animals did nothing for me, millions of them die
every day. Who’s so say if I didn’t kill them, they’re
more than likely to be eaten by something bigger later
that day anyway. So, I moved onto something that doesn’t
die everyday.

A woman stands at the entrance to the woods and lets her dog off the
lead, the dog darts into the woods. A wide shot shows the entrance
to the woods and the woman walking in behind her dog, yet the dog
has run off far ahead of her. The dog trots around the woods with
its big slobbery tongue sticking out, sniffing the tall trees and
fragrant flowers that are dotted all over the woods. Eventually, the
dog runs into a large holly bush with a fair amount of paths within
it, like a maze. The dog runs past the camera, and Young Darnell
follows slowly behind it dragging his bat on the ground behind him.
We see the dog become lost in the holly bush, when we hear a soft
whistle before a fairly low, unnerving child’s voice speaks.
DARNELL
Hey doggy.
The dog comes to Darnell and sits down, he strokes the dog on the
head.
DARNELL
Hello, what’s your name?
The dog looks up at him with friendly eyes and a big slobbery tongue
poking out.
DARNELL
(Low, raspy child’s voice)
Yes, yes good doggy.
Darnell stays stroking the dog with one hand and with the other, he
slowly reaches over and grabs his bat tight. The sound of wood being
dragged across leaves is heard.
DARNELL
Yes, that’s a very, very good doggy.
As he speaks, the camera slowly tilts up and the dog is no longer
seen in shot and instead we see Darnell raise the bat high above his
head and then bring it down hard over the dog’s head repeatedly. The
sound of the dog yelping can be heard as well as crows in the
background. A wide shot of the woods as the dog’s owner walks into
shot and in the centre of the frame.
DOG OWNER
Benny! Benny!... Benny?
EXT. IN THE WOODS – MIDDAY
Young Darnell stares into the camera with a sinister look on his
face as the camera slowly pulls out.
DARNELL (V/O)
Since then, I knew what I had to kill to get that buzz.
It was ecstatic. Cats and dogs were my new target,
waiting around in that woods for hours with my bat
waiting for them to come bounding through.
A quick cut montage of Darnell’s bat being raised above his head and
bringing it down hard and the sound of innocent dogs yelping and
cats hissing and letting out long painful meows.
I ended up securing a bit of a name for myself.
EXT. A QUIET STREET WITH WALLS AND LAMPPOSTS WITH POSTERS STUCK TO
THEM.
Young Darnell walks down the pavement of a quiet street, as he
passes the walls, fences and lampposts that sit next to the pavement
we see missing cat and dog posters zip tied and stabled to each
surface. He eventually arrives at a newspaper stand outside of a
shop where he looks down to see an eye-catching title. “The Pet
Prowler Strikes Again”, an article in the county tabloid reporting
on a case of multiple missing animals that have gone missing been
found dead in the woods. Darnell looks down at this and a wide grin
spreads across his face, he takes the paper at the top of the pile
and walks out of frame while reading it.
INT. DARNELL’S APARTMENT NOW – NIGHT
A slow push in on his face.
DARNELL (V/O)
Fast forward nine years, and I live alone with eight
kills of dogs and cats under my belt, and five women
buried in the soil because of me. It became an addiction,
(starts laughing) I’m sick you see.
Darnell grins and starts laughing hysterically.
The Way I Am Instrumental, by Eminem PLAYS
We see Darnell sat at his kitchen table with a red marker, a laptop
and pieces of paper scattered across the table. Shots of his eyes
and his grin growing bigger are shown as he peers over these
documents. The pieces of paper show many different popular
nightclubs and restaurants. Darnell looks them up on the laptop to
figure out how far they are from him, he chooses the furthest one
that is a twenty-minute drive from him. A restaurant with many
reviews mentioning the number of smokers out the front of the
establishment. This excites Darnell and gets up from the counter and
collects a sachet of sleeping pills from a drawer and leaves his
apartment.

TEXT: 2 days later.
‘If I Didn’t Care’ by The Ink Spots PLAYS
Darnell stands in his kitchen preparing some kind of food, he wears loose
joggers, a stained white vest and a pair of slippers. He looks down at his
food with a smile. The sound of muffled dialogue a quiet banging sound can
be heard coming from behind him. Darnell turns off the heat before taking
his knife over to the sink, washing it and drying it with a towel. He then
walks over to a drawer and opens it, he takes out a sachet of sleeping
pills only to realise that he has run out and there is no way of further
sedating the victim. So, with a big sinister grin across his face, he
slowly walks towards a cupboard in his apartment, the muffled speech and
banging grow louder and faster as he approaches. We see a pack of
cigarettes placed on the counter in front of the cupboard. As he opens the
door by a crack, green light pours out of the cupboard to reveal a small
amount of a girl’s face, tied up with her mouth taped shut. Darnell stares
down at her as he opens the door completely, one of his hands stays by his
side and he doesn’t allow the girl to see what he has in it until he steps
into the centre of the doorframe to reveal that he is still holding the
large kitchen knife. The girl screams under the tape and starts to squirm
and get away, but Darnell pushes her back into the cupboard. A slow pull
out shot from behind him shows him stepping into the cupboard and grabbing
the girl, before drawing his knife and stabbing her repeatedly. The girl’s
eyes widen tremendously as she shrieks in pain and terror. Blood pours out
over the floor and walls as the knife penetrates her flesh over and over
again. Darnell stands up straight and drops the knife, taking a step back
from the door and allowing it to close slowly. He breathes quickly and
very heavily with the same sinister grim on his face, as if he’d just
taken a hot of some kind of drug, as he runs his hands through his hair
and chuckles. He exhales sharply before opening door to look down on the
girl’s dead corpse, eyes still wide open and doused in blood from her
wounds. He smiles wide as he peers down at her. Blood trickles across the
floor and hits his slippers.
Scene 4.
EXT. BUS STOP – LATE MORNING
Darnell stands alone at a bus stop, he looks around briefly before
his eyes meet something of interest to him. The camera pulls out
from his face to reveal an attractive young woman named TRACY, stood
at the other end of the stop on her phone. Darnell admires her from
afar, until suddenly the bus comes flying past and skips the bus-
stop they were both waiting at.
TRACY
No! Ahhhhh, dammit! I’m going to be really late!
Darnell steps out from where he was stood and stares the back of the
bus down in frustration. He accidentally locks eyes with the Tracy.
TRACY
Excuse me?
DARNELL
Hi. (smiles)
TRACY
Do you happen to know when the next bus is?
DARNELL
Oh no I don’t, let me check though.
Darnell walks over to the board in the bus shelter and checks when
the next bus is.
It’s at 2:45, its like 25 minutes.
TRACY
Uhhhhhh! Screw it, it’ll be quicker to just walk it.
She turns away to start walking before Darnell calls her back.
DARNELL
Where’ you headed?
Tracy smirks
TRACY
Um, that new coffee shop in town. I’m meeting a friend.
DARNELL
Oh, that’s opposite Sainsburys isn’t it.
TRACY (Smiling)
Near enough yeah.
DARNELL
(Chuckling) Oh good, that’s where I’m going. Would you
mind if I walked with you?
TRACY
(Chuckling) Yeah sure, I’m Tracy.
She holds her hand to Darnell. He shakes it and grins.
DARNELL
(Grinning) Darnell.
The two turn their backs to camera and walk off chattering
indistinctly.
EXT. HIGH STREET – MIDDAY
TRACY
(Chuckling) Ok I have to go now Darnell, it was lovely to
meet you though.
DARNELL
(Smiling) Likewise Tracy. Can I please give you my phone
number.
TRACY
(Smiling) You may.
Tracy hands him her phone and Darnell types in his number. He holds
out her phone in front of him.
DARNELL
(Smiling) Use accordingly.
Tracy takes her phone back.
TRACY
(Smiling) Will do, bye Darnell.
She turns and walks into the coffee shop, and Darnell smiles and
walks across the road to the Sainsburys across the street.

TEXT: 2 days later
Darnell sits at his table typing on his computer, yet he keeps
getting brain block and looking off into the distance, seemingly
distracted. He then gets up and tries to watch some TV, yet as he
sits there flipping through channel it becomes obvious that he is
bored and has something on his mind.

after a while he becomes frustrated, gives up and walks away.
Suddenly the phone rings and Darnell runs back to the phone and

DARNELL
Hello?
TRACY
Darnell?
DARNELL
(Grinning slightly) Speaking.
TRACY
(Giggles) It’s Tracy…
Darnell takes the phone away from his ear and fist bumps the air
excitedly.
… from the other day.
DARNELL
No yeah I remember, of course I remember. I was really
hoping you’d call.
TRACY
How could I forget.
Darnell laughs, he smiles wide as he talks to her.
DARNELL
It happens.
TRACY
(Laughs) I’m shocked. I was just calling to ask when your

TRACY
Ugh, I am knackered I think I should probably head off.
It’s getting quite late.
Darnell looks up at her, his content expression fades and he is
visibly puzzled about what to say next. For the first time ever, he
feels out of control with a woman in his apartment. He peers over at
the draw with the sleeping pills in it, then over to the cupboard.
Until eventually, hesitantly, he looks up at her with a smile and
replies.
DARNELL
Yeah, ok. I’ll walk you.
TRACY
Oh, are you sure?
DARNELL
Yeah of course, I’d be happy to.
TRACY
Oh ok. Let’s go then.
The two smile at each other and put on their coats. Darnell opens

DARNELL
What’s wrong what happened.
TRACY
(Sobbing) My sister’s missing

Darnell looks at her in disbelief and suddenly, an overwhelming

sense of worry comes over him.
DARNELL
(whispered) What?
TRACY
(Sobbing) No one’s seen her in seven days, do you
think something could have happened to her?
DARNELL
I really hope not Trace. But don’t… don’t think
about stuff like that she could turn up, ok?
TRACY
(Wiping her tears away) You’re right. It’s so scary
though, look.
She goes into her pocket and pulls out a raggedy, folded piece of
paper. She starts to unfold it.

He rubs his eyes and stares off into the corner of the room, he
feels numb. Darnell, a complex psychopath, feels guilt and remorse
for one of his many kills. He feels like a complete joke. Suddenly,
the phone rings and Darnell lumbers out of bed to answer the phone.
DARNELL
Hello?
TRACY
Hi, it’s me.
Darnell, pauses for a moment. He looks as if he’s holding back
tears, he grips the phone tightly before replying.
DARNELL
(Whispered) Hi. How are you.
TRACY
I’m doing better, I’d love to see you if your
around.
DARNELL
Oh. Ok.
TRACY
What’s wrong?
DARNELL
I’m so sorry but I just feel awful I think I’ve
woken up with some kind of flu.

TRACY
Oh no, you do sound a bit rough.
DARNELL
Yeah.
TRACY
That’s a real shame. I do hope you get well soon
though.
DARNELL
I’ll dose up don’t worry.
TRACY
Ok. (Pause) I love you.
Darnell shuts his eyes and a single tear rolls out past his cheek.
DARNELL
(Choking up) I love you too.
TRACY
Bye, Darnell.
DARNELL
Bye Tracy.
Darnell hangs up the phone and stands over it for a moment before
turning. He stares at the wall with the same numb facial expression
as before, he is empty and angry at himself.
Scene 9.
INT. DARNELL’S APARTMENT – NIGHT
Darnell sits on his sofa, large bags sit beneath his eyes as he
flicks through TV channels. He looks defeated. As he flicks through
the channels something catches his eye. A local News Broadcast on a
missing person.
REPORTER
The young woman was last seen eight days ago at a
restaurant on the main Marlow high street. An unnamed
individual tells us that they are a friend of Michelle
who was meeting her for for dinner, and she allegedly
went out for a cigarette and never returned.
A picture of Tracy’s sister is put up on screen on a missing poster
with the name Michelle Michaels on it. Darnell can’t believe his
eyes and bows his head in his hands in shame. He then looks away
from the TV, he looks over at the other side of the room and sees a
duffle bag sat on the floor. The paranoia and guilt has started to
build up inside Darnell and he is starting to convince himself that
being linked to Tracy could be a very strong lead to him being
caught for his murders.

Darnell starts to pack the duffle bag with all of his sleeping

the pills and kicks them into the water as well, so they dissolve.
Darnell drives home with a very serious expression on his face,
though, he seems slightly more relaxed now that he has disposed of
any evidence.

INT. DARNELL’S APARTMENT – NIGHT
Text: Two days later
Darnell is sat at his kitchen table sipping a drink, he’s wearing
boots and a jacket as well as if he’s ready to go somewhere. His
eyes are wide and emotionless as he stares off at the wall in front
of him, he seems truly out of touch. Suddenly, the phone rings and
his machine picks it up and a message starts playing from Tracy. She
sounds somewhat upset.
TRACY
Hey, Darnell it’s me again. I haven’t heard from you
in two days now, I don’t know what I’ve done wrong
if you’re hearing this please talk to me. Goodbye.

The machine clicks and the message stops. Darnell stares at the
phone with wide eyes, filled with dread. Darnell picks up the phone,
and his fingers shake as he hesitantly enters her phone number to
call her back. The phone rings and he stands over the table that the
phone sits upon, waiting for her to answer. Soon, she answers.
TRACY
Hello?
Darnell stares off into the distance as he leans on the coffee table
with the phone on top of it, he is speechless and breathes sort of
heavily down the phone.
TRACY
Who is this?
DARNELL
Tracy?
TRACY
(excitedly) Darnell?
DARNELL
Hello, Tracy.
TRACY
Where have you been?
Darnell pauses once again, his eyes dart as he gathers his thoughts
on what to say next. Until, he stands up straight takes a deep
breath and replies. His eyes still wide as ever as he speaks.
DARNELL
I’ve been… here. At home.
TRACY
Oh.
DARNELL
Tracy, listen to me ok?
TRACY
(Worriedly) What is it Darnell?

DARNELL
Tracy… you’re never… you’re never going to see your
sister again. Michelle is gone. Which means… you’ll
never see me again. I can’t bring myself to explain
to you why that is, but it’s just the way it has to

Darnell stares off into nothing with a devastated expression across
his face.
DARNELL

Darnell shakes his head and bows it with the phone still being held

phone in a state of pure shock and confusion.
