ACTIVITY SHEET NO.1

AN INTRODUCTION TO ROBOTICS ENGINEERING

Topic: ETYMOLOGICAL DEFINITIONS OF ROBOTS AND ROBOTICS

1. Define robotics
• The branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation,
and application of robots.

2. What is a robot? When do we say a machine is a robot?

• A robot is a type of automated machine that can execute specific task with
little or no human intervention and with speed and precision. A robot is a
machine especially one programmable by a computer-capable of carrying out a
complex series of actions automatically.

Topic: ESSENTIALS CHARACTERISTICS OF A ROBOT

1. What are sensors? Compare the functions of sensors of a robot to sense organs of a
human body?
• The sense involves multiple sensors, including touch and your body’s internal
balancing mechanisms. Robots are said to show complex processes or
operations, human are far more advanced, in the sense that they have a highly
developed brain that no robot has ever matched up to.

2. What is the importance of programming to a robot?

• In the school setting, robot encourage problem-solving creative thinking, and a
healthy sense of competition that drives innovation from students.

Topic: THREE LAWS OF ROBOTICS

1. Compare and contrast the three LAWS OF ROBOTICS.
• The first law is that the robot shall not injure a human being, or through
inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. The second law is that a robot
must obey the orders given it by human beings, and the third law is that a
robot shall avoid actions or situations that could cause it to come to harm
itself.

2. What is the implication/s of the laws of robotics to the human race?

• Isaac Asimov suggested laws were devised to protect humans from robots.

Topic: CATEGORIES OF A ROBOT

1. What are the different categories of robot? Describe by each by not more than three
sentences.
• Robot are categorized in different categories. Environmental, which built for
helping, exploring, studying environment where people can’t reach. Medical

which built and designed to help and to make easier for doctors during medical
operations. Industrial build to do task that are risky to human life. Educational
which built for educational purposes where students may program their own
robot and help them in their studying. Military built to enter a battlefield with
its capabilities in combat. Household built for assistance in cleaning the
household and organizing things in the household.

Topic: PROS AND CONS OF A ROBOT

1. What are the advantages as well as disadvantages of having a robot? Substantiate your answer
in not more than five sentences.
• ADVANTAGES
In many situation robots can increase productivity, efficiency, quality and
consistency of product: Unlike humans, robot don’t get bored. Until they wear
out, they can do the same thing again and again.
• DISADVANTAGES
The use of robots can create economic problems if they replace human jobs.
Robots can only do what they are told to do-they can’t improvise. This means
that safety procedures are needed to protect humans and other robots.
2. Do you think robots can replace human being? Why or why not? Elaborate your answer
in not more than five sentences.
• For me yes, robots will replace humans for many jobs, just as innovative
farming equipment replaced humans and horses during the industrial
revolution. Factory floors deploy robots that are increasingly driven by
machine learning algorithms such that they can adjust to people working
alongside them.
