1.0 PURPOSE

The aim of this calculation report is to verify the fencing post embedded depth
into mass concrete foundation on flat ground for KTM Double Track Gemas-
JB Project.

2.0 SCOPE

The scope of this calculation note covers the following: -

1. To check post embedded depth into concrete foundation.

3.0 DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

The original post embedded depth in concrete as presented by principle C&S

Consultant (SSP) is 750mm. Gap from ground level to bottom of fence is
50mm and fence height is 1830mm. The fence details drawing prepared by
principle C&S Consultant as attached in Appendix A for reference.

As the welded fence is spaced at 200mm vertically, manufacturer can only

produce fence height of 1800mm and not 1830mm. However due to 1st batch
of post produced at length of 2550mm, the post embedded depth in concrete
can now be 700mm which is short by 50mm compared to SSP drawings.
Therefore, there is a need to check the post embedment depth to comply with
Codes and Standards.

4.0 APPLICABLE CODES, SPECIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS

Order of Precedence of Codes and Standards shall be as follows:

i) Mandatory Malaysian codes and standards where required by

Malaysian Law.

ii) International Codes and Standards.

4.1 MALAYSIAN CODES AND STANDARDS

UBBL 1984 - Uniform Building By-law (1984)

MS 1553: 2002 - Code of Practice on Wind Loading for Building Structure

5.0 MATERIAL PROPERTIES

The following material properties are considered in the design:

Concrete : Grade 15/20, fcu = 15 N/mm2

Reinforcement Bars : High Tensile Reinforcing Bars, fy = 460 N/mm2

Structural Steel : Grade S275, Py = 275 N/mm²

6.0 BASIC LOAD CASE

6.1 DEAD LOAD (D)

Dead load shall include the weight of the materials forming a permanent part
of the structural elements and all other permanent equipment and materials
attached hereto.

❖ Dead loads shall be calculated from unit weights of materials given in

BS648.
❖ The weights of some commonly used materials are as follows:

Density of Reinforced Concrete 24 kN/m³

Density of Structural Steel 7850 kg/m³

6.2 LIVE LOAD (L)

The fencing components shall be capable of resisting a load of 700 N every

metre at a height 1.1m above ground level.

6.3 WIND LOAD (W)

Wind load means all loads due to the effect of wind pressure or suction. The
wind can blow in any direction and the most unfavorable case shall be
considered.

Wind load shall be calculated in accordance with MS 1553:2002 with the

following provisional:-

(a) Basic wind speed V = 33.5 m/s (Zone I)

(b) Solidity ratio for fence = 0.14

Refer Appendix B for detail wind pressure calculation.

7.0 LOAD COMBINATIONS

Foundations and structures shall be designed to withstand load combinations

listed in this section.

Unfactored load combinations (Serviceability Limit State – SLS) shall be used

for check against bearing capacity and stability of footing.

Factored load combinations (Ultimate Limit State – ULS) shall be used for
designing steel structures and concrete foundations.

All Load Combinations shall be in accordance with BS 8110.

The following load combinations shall be considered:

7.1 ULTIMATE STRENGTH ANALYSIS

For Ultimate Strength Analysis, the following load combinations were

considered:

- 1.6 LL
- 1.4 WL
- 1.2 (LL + WL)

7.2 SERVICEABILITY ANALYSIS

For Serviceability Analysis, the following load combinations were considered:

- 1.0 LL
- 1.0 WL
- 1.0 (LL + WL)

8.0 DESIGN CHECK

Design calculation for post embedment depth on mass concrete foundation are
presented in Appendix C.

9.0 CONCLUSION

Based on analysis result, it can be concluded that the proposed embedded

depth 700mm for fence post in concrete foundation is adequate as per
following outcome.

a) Calculated post embedded depth required = 279 mm

b) Recommended fence post foundation depth = 600 mm (Table 3, BS 1722-
14)
c) Provided post embedded depth = 700mm > 279 mm and > 600mm.

SUMMARY
From design guide given by ANSI/ASAE and BS1722, it is found that the embedment depth of post for
fencing height of 1800mm is 279mm and 600mm respectively. Adopt the greater as the required design depth.
