RULES -ING

Most verbs take –ing.


talk  talking
cook  cooking
start  starting
do  doing
fix  fixing
eat  eating
stay  satying
Verbs ending in –e, drop the –e before the –ing (except for –ee and –ie)
come  coming
hope  hoping
ride  riding
make  making
write  writing
Verbs ending in –ee just take the –ing.
agree  agreeing
see  seeing
Verbs ending in –ie, change the –ie to –y and add -ing
die  dying
lie  lying
Verbs ending one vowel and one consonant (except for w, y and x)
One syllable verbs
Double the consonant and add –ing
stop  stopping
sit  sitting
run  running
Two syllable verbs
First syllable stressed Second syllable stressed
Just add -ing Double the consonant and add –ing
answer  answering begin  beginning
listen  listening admit  admittiing
visit  visiting prefer  preferring
Verbs ending in vowel + -l, double the consonant and add -ing
travel  travelling
