After working briefly as staff photographer for the Recorder, in September 1939 Parks returned to
working for the railroad, this time as a porter traveling between the Twin Cities and Chicago. A

So when a young Gordon Parks showed up at the magazine with the idea of making photographs of
Harlem’s gangs, a picture essay was the natural end point for such a project. The work reminds one
of what may have happened with Weegee in Chrome. But, as is true of most personages in this book,
famous or not, he is not identified. His brother had been a lieutenant fighting in World War I in a

of an exhibition, which brings together 150 photographs and ephemera—including magazines,
books, letters, and family pictures. It's not until the 'coloured only' signs hit you that one realises the
inhumane treatment of section of america by another. The control Parks had and his ability to read
the terrain of diverse fields of discipline with clarity of his own solidifies itself in this volume.

was getting better for African Americans, an idealistic representation of the lived experience at the

the decision was made to take the lazy, sloppy way out. He went on to direct a series of
documentaries for the National Educational Television which were based on the black ghetto life and
the underlying aspects. The article, titled “Carioca’s Revenge,” accused Ballot of manipulating his
images, perhaps even placing the insects on the boy. The works begin to feel similar in range to
