So when a young Gordon Parks showed up at the magazine with the idea of making photographs of
Harlem’s gangs, a picture essay was the natural end point for such a project. The work reminds one
of what may have happened with Weegee in Chrome. But, as is true of most personages in this book,
famous or not, he is not identified. His brother had been a lieutenant fighting in World War I in a
