Course Overview
This course aims to cover the Concept of any design task in CAD/CAM environment, It aims
to impart the parametric fundamentals to create and manipulate geometric models using
curves, surfaces and solids. It also aims to introduce the students to computer numerical
control for manufacturing; Basic component of and classification of NC machine tools;
Manual NC programming; CAD/CAM systems for programming..

Course Learning Outcomes

CLO Up on successful completion of this course, students should be able PLO

CLO1 apply the design concepts for any design task in CAD/CAM PLO3
environment

CLO2 apply the best use of computer Aided manufacture concepts in a PLO5
modern factory

CLO3 create and manipulate geometric models using curves, surfaces and PLO3
solids

CLO4 write NC programming for Lathe and Milling machine based on the PLO1
given drawing

CLO5 Apply the concepts of machining for the purpose of selection of PLO5
appropriate machining centers, machining parameters, select
appropriate cutting tools for CNC milling and turning equipment, set-
up, program, and operate CNC milling and turning equipment.

CLO6 able to develop knowledge and skills in designing using both PLO3
SolidWorks/ CATIA software and MasterCam software and derive
computer-aided NC part program from the models

Course Content

Introduction to CAD/CAM; Fundamentals of cad/cam automation, Design process,


application of computers for design, Benefits of cad computer application for cad application-
computer peripherals, design work station, graphic terminal CAD software, CAD database
and structure Computer Aided Manufacturing Definition, Benefits and its application.

Geometric, Surface and 3D Solid Modeling: Geometric Modeling: 3-D wire frame
modeling, wire frame entities and their definitions, interpolation and approximation of curves,
concepts of parametric and nonparametric representation, curve fitting techniques, definition
of cubic spline, Bezier and b-spline

Numerical Control Need of NC technology, Fundamental concepts in numeric


control: structure and functions of NC System, Motion control, Major components and
Characteristics of an NC machine tool, Standard tooling used for NC turning and milling
centres.

NC Part Programming Preparatory functions, axis, miscellaneous commands and Coordinate


systems, Work holding and tool setting procedure for NC turning and milling centres, Tool zero
presetting, compensation, Block formats and introduction to ISO based G & M codes for NC part
programming,

Instructional Method

The main teaching method will be based on active learning (Practice on hand) usually in CAD lab.
Tutorials will be used to reinforce the course material and to discuss the issues raised by the
directed reading. During tutorial sessions, students are encouraged to attempt the tutorial exercises
independently and provide solutions. Weekly individual/Group assignments will be given to
promote preparation for the upcoming lesson.

To pass this course you must:

 Attempt all assessments.


 Must achieve greater than 40% in the final exam.

100% during practical work sessions except for some unprecedented mishaps.

This course is one of the highly applicable courses in industries. Students are expected
to attend all classes regularly and study from text books once the topic is discussed in
classes.

Students are advised to prepare for classes by reading the available materials before
coming to classes and participate actively to enhance better understanding of the course
and attain the learning outcomes.

There have been many reference books proposed for each topic which will be discussed
in class. Students are encouraged to read and prepare based on the additional materials.
Students are expected to update the development of the project on the weekly basis and
report irregularities to be sorted out at the earliest.
