METAL WALL PANELS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Preformed prefinished metal cladding and wall panel systems horizontal or


vertical profile, insulated with structural attachments including but not limited to
the following: -

1. Metal Cladding Panels

2. Accessories including clips, bracing, reinforcement, anchors, fasteners,


stiffeners and similar items as required to properly erect, align, secure
and complete the work of this section.

3. Sealants, caulking and closure gaskets for the work of this section.

4. Continuous caps and trim integral to the work of this section.

5. Factory finishing of exposed surface of components included in this


section.

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. System: Preformed and prefinished match siding system of horizontal and


vertical profile, site assembled.

1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. General: Provide metal wall panel assemblies that comply with performance
requirements specified as determined by testing manufacturers' standard
assemblies similar to those indicated for this Project, by a qualified testing and
inspecting agency.

B. Air Infiltration: Air leakage through assembly of not more than (0.3 L/s per sq.
m) of wall area when tested according to ASTM E 283 at a static-air-pressure
difference of (300 Pa).

C. Water Penetration (Static Pressure Test): No water penetration when tested


according to ASTM E 331 at a minimum differential pressure of 20 percent of
inward-acting, wind-load design pressure of not less than (300 Pa) and not
more than (575 Pa).

D. Water Penetration (Dynamic Pressure Test): No evidence of water leakage


when tested according to AAMA 501.1 under dynamic pressure equal to 20
percent of inward-acting, wind-load design pressure of not less than (300 Pa)
and not more than (575 Pa).

Water Leakage: As defined according to AAMA 501.1.

E. Water Absorption: Maximum 1.0 percent absorption rate by volume when


tested according to ASTM C 209.

F. Structural Performance: Provide metal wall panel assemblies capable of


withstanding the effects of gravity loads and the following loads and stresses
within limits and under conditions indicated, based on testing according to
ASTM E 1592.

1. Wind Loads: Determine loads based on the following minimum design


wind pressures:

a. 100 mph (160 km/hr), exposure D.

2. Deflection Limits: Engineer metal wall panel assemblies to withstand


test pressures with deflection no greater than 1/180 of the span and no
evidence of material failure, structural distress, or permanent
deformation exceeding 0.2 percent of the clear span.

a. Test Pressures: 150 percent of inward and outward wind-load


design pressures.

G. Seismic Performance: Provide metal wall panel assemblies capable of
withstanding the effects of earthquake motions determined according to
ASCE 7, "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures":
Section 9, "Earthquake Loads."

H. Thermal Movements: Provide metal wall panel assemblies that allow for
thermal movements resulting from the following maximum change (range) in
ambient and surface temperatures by preventing buckling, opening of joints,
overstressing of components, failure of joint sealants, failure of connections,
and other detrimental effects. Base engineering calculation on surface
temperatures of materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky heat
loss.

I. Thermal Movements for Metal-Faced Composite Wall Panels: Provide


composite wall panel assemblies that allow for noiseless thermal movements
resulting from the following range in ambient temperatures and that prevent
buckling, opening of joints, overstressing of components, failure of joint
sealants, failure of connections, and other detrimental effects:

1. Ambient Temperature Range: Minus 20 to plus 180 deg F (Minus 29


to plus 82 deg C).

J. Thermal Performance: Provide insulated metal wall panel assemblies with


thermal-resistance value (R-value) indicated when tested according to
ASTM C 236 or ASTM C 518.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Materials and work shall conform to the latest edition of reference standards
listed below, specified herein and to all applicable codes and requirements of
local authorities having jurisdiction, whichever is more stringent.

1. `9Applicable provisions of the AAMA (American Architectural


Manufacturer's Association) and the NAAMM (National Association of
Architectural Metal Manufacturers).

B. Welding shall conform to requirements for shielded metal arc welding of the
Standard Code for Arc and Gas Welding of the American Welding Society.

C. Qualifications

1. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company regularly engaged in the


production and erection of the type of work specified herein with not less
than five years to be connected experience.

2. Installer: Company specializing in performing work of this section with


minimum five years documented experience.

D. Performance

1. Metal panels shall meet in every respect or exceed the requirements


specified herein.

2. Metal wall panel systems shall be designed for a minimum wind load of
152 kg/m2.

1.6 PERFORMANCE TESTING

A. Color Change and Fade Resistance: A sample shall (in accordance with ASTM
E 838) withstand an EMMAQUA weathering test exposure (Exterior Equatorial
Mount with Mirrors and water spray) for 800,000 Langleys of ultraviolet radiation
without cracking, peeling, blistering or loss of adhesion. Maximum color change,
after removal of all exterior or surface deposits such as dirt, or chalk, shall not
exceed 5 NBS units.

B. Abrasion-Resistance Test for Coating System: A flat specimen shall be subject


to abrasion-resistance test. Test shall be conducted in accordance with ASTM
D 968 (Falling Sand). Coating system shall resist abrasion to extent indicated
by use of not less than 300 liters of sand to produce the exposure of 3.9 mm
diameter area of bare metal.

C. Coating Systems Integrity Test: A sample shall withstand a salt-fog test for a
minimum of 1250 hours in accordance with ASTM B 117, including scribe
requirement in test. Immediately upon removal of specimen from test, coating
system shall show no signs of cracking, peeling, blistering or loss of adhesion.

D. Pollution-Resistance Test: A flat specimen, with no protected edges, shall be


subjected to 30 cycles of Kesternich testing without blistering, or loss of
adhesion. Kesternich test consists of eight hours of exposure at 40 0C with 100
% relative humidity (condensing) in a controlled sulphur dioxide (S02)
atmosphere. Atmospheric concentration of pollutant gases shall be in
accordance with Kesternich test standards (2.0 liters of S02). This shall be
followed by 16 hours of dry time, which concludes one cycle of testing.

E. Humidity-Resistance Test: A sample shall be tested for 1,000 hours at 38


degrees centigrade at 100% relative humidity, in accordance with ASTM D
2247 with no blistering, peeling or loss of adhesion.

1.7 SUBMITTALS

A. Shop Drawings

1. Submit Shop Drawings for each type of panel system specified herein.

a. Shop drawings shall show locations of work in the Project,


elevations and profiles; indicate materials, sizes, shapes,
thicknesses, and finishes; sizes and locations of structural
subframes and reinforcing; provisions for thermal movement and
drainage; provisions including location and installation
requirements for anchors, fasteners, joints and connection to
other work.
b. Submit large-scale details of edge conditions, joints, corners,
custom profiles, supports, anchorages, trim, flashings, closures
and special details.

2. Shop drawings shall be in addition to the manufacturer's standard


printed literature specified herein under Product Data.

3. Shop drawings shall clearly indicate the structural framing members


furnished and installed by others, to which the metal wall panels will be
attached.

4. Any deviations from design as shown on the Drawings and/or materials
specified herein, shall be clearly indicated on shop drawings and will be
subject to the review and approval of the Engineer, prior to fabrication.

B. Samples

1. Samples of wall and soffit system components and materials specified


herein shall be submitted for approval, and approval obtained before
materials are fabricated.

2. Samples shall be fully identified, labeled and shall show extremes in


variations of finishes of metal work.

3. Submit manufacturer’s color chart.

4. external metal panels, including facade panels, where shown shall match
in finish and color.

C. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's latest published literature for materials


specified herein for approval. Obtain approval before materials are delivered to
the job site. Literature shall include proposed field method of touching up
scratches and abrasions after erection.

D. Test Data: Submit certified laboratory test reports for the performance tests
specified in this Section.

1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Exercise proper care and protection in the delivery and handling of all work so
as not to injure the finished surfaces and take proper precautions to protect the
work from damage after it is in place.

B. Store off the ground, in a dry, protected ventilated space. Protect all materials
from rust, damage and detrimental conditions.

1.9 JOB CONDITIONS

A. Protect work from weather, stains, soil, deterioration and damage of all kinds,
until completion of the project. Sprayed-on, strippable coating shall not be
used. Absorptive wrappings shall not be in contact with architectural metal.
After erection but before final cleaning and inspection, replace protective
coverings and take all other measures necessary to guard work from
construction abuse.

B. Damaged or Unsatisfactory Work: Remove from the project and replace with
new work at no additional cost to the Owner.

1.10 WARRANTY

A. Provide manufacturer’s 10-year warranty for finishing system from substantial


completion against fading, chipping, cracking, peeling, blistering, alligatoring or
crazing. Materials showing evidence of said failure shall be removed and/or
replaced during the warranty period, at no additional cost to the Owner. Repair
work to be performed to the satisfaction of the Owner.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 METAL CLADDING PANELS

A. Material Composition: Panel shall be of aluminum composite material


consisting of polyethylene or non-combustible mineral filled core sandwiched
between two skins of 0.5 mm thick aluminum sheets, 4 mm minimum total
thickness with the following characteristics:

B. Finish (on one-side): Three-coat, shop applied, high performance polyvinylidene


fluoride (PVDF) coating based on Hylar 5000 resin formulated by a licensed
manufacturer and applied by manufacturer’s approved applicator, to meet
AAMA 2605.

C. Factory formed to shapes.

D. Fabricate according to approved shop drawings.

E. Provide reveals as shown on the Drawings.

2.2 ACCESSORIES

A. Fastening Devices

1. Clips and fasteners composed of stainless-steel ASTM A 167 and A 276,


Type 302 or 304 as specified herein and shall conform to ASTM F 468.

a. Machine Screws shall be flat head type.


b. Nuts and Bolts shall conform to ASTM A 307.

B. Support Systems

1. Galvanizing: Galvanize all steel components as follows:

a. Galvanized metal framing components shall comply with ASTM A


525 for G-90 coating.
b. Hot-Dip Galvanizing, where specified or required, shall conform to
ASTM A 123. Galvanized coatings shall successfully withstand the
"Preece Test" referred to in the standard.

2. Fastening Devices

a. Concrete Anchors shall be die cast zinc alloy, Split Shield and
Wedge type machine bolt expansion shields of rated holding power
four times required working load, tested in accordance with ASTM
E 488.
b. Nuts and Bolts shall conform to ASTM A 307.
c. Fastening devices shall be galvanized as specified herein and shall
be of sizes required to support the work of this section.

C. Paint

1. Touchup paint for galvanized surfaces shall be epoxy zinc rich primer
"90-97 Tneme-Zinc".

2. Paint for the rust-inhibitive treatment of miscellaneous steel shall be a


catalyzed epoxy primer.

D. Joinery System

1. Metal to Metal Sealant: Interior joints concealed in the finished work shall
be approved manufacturer's standard sealant, shown on shop drawings
submitted for approval.

2. Exposed gaskets shall be performed, compressible, non-absorbing,


closed cell neoprene as recommended and approved by metal wall panel
manufacturer. System horizontal and vertical weather joints shall be "dry"
gasket system.

3. Where shown on the Drawings, trimless or closed end panels shall be
factory fabricated and utilize a field installed recessed dry gasket.

E. Metal Trim: Provide metal trim and accessories to cap, enclose and finish metal
panel system.

F. Sealants: Provide sealants as specified in Section 079200.

G. Miscellaneous Items: Provide miscellaneous items as shown or as required for


locations of use. Provide items best suited for intended use and compatible
with contiguous materials.

H. Insulation: Provide integral thermal and acoustic insulation as shown.

2.3 ALUMINUM FINISHES

A. General: Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual" for recommendations


relative to applying and designating finishes.

B. Finish designations prefixed by AA conform to the system established by the


Aluminum Association for designating aluminum finishes.

C. Fluoropolymer Three-Coat System: Manufacturer's standard three-coat,


thermocured system consisting of specially formulated inhibitive primer,
fluoropolymer color coat, and clear fluoropolymer topcoat, with both color coat
and clear topcoat containing not less than 70 percent polyvinylidene fluoride
resin by weight, with a minimum total dry film thickness of 0.038 mm; complying
with AAMA 2605.

1. Color and Gloss: As selected by Engineer from manufacturer's full range


of choices for color and gloss

2.4 FABRICATION

A. Provide materials which have been selected for their surface flatness,
smoothness and freedom from surface blemishes wherever exposed to view in
the finished unit. Exposed-to-view surfaces which exhibit pitting, seam marks,
roller marks, "oil canning", stains, discolorations or other imperfections on the
finished units will not be acceptable.

B. Provide components required for a complete system, including trim, clips,


flashing, sealants, gaskets, closure strips and similar items. Match materials
and finishes with metal panels.

C. Fabricate work accurately to required shapes and sizes, free of warps, twists
and bends.

D. Take field measurements prior to preparation of shop drawings and fabrication,


to ensure proper fitting of the work. However, do not delay job progress; allow
for adjustments and fitting wherever the taking of field measurements before
fabrication might delay the work.

E. Fabricate units in the factory ready for field assembly.

F. Panels shall be provided with provisions to fasten to supporting construction
with weathertight seals at joints.

G. Provide clips, angles and bracing, as necessary and required to anchor,


support, and reinforce the work of this section.

H. Make connections in concealed and inconspicuous locations using mechanical


fasteners selected for strength. Use exposed fasteners to match color of panels
only where approved in shop drawings.

I. Fabricate with position for exposed fasteners in lowest point of corrugation.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSPECTION

A. Make a thorough examination of all surfaces receiving the work of this section
and before starting the installation. Start of work shall imply acceptance of
conditions as satisfactory for the installation of the work of this section.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Verify measurements and dimensions at the job site and cooperate in the
coordination and scheduling of the work of this section with the work of related
trades (with particular attention given to the installation of items embedded in or
attached to other work and to required support items) so as not to delay job
progress.

B. Isolate galvanized metal from dissimilar metals, masonry, concrete, and wood
by coating with bituminous mastic paint specified herein.

3.3 INSTALLATION/ERECTION

A. Set work accurately in location, alignment and elevation, plumb, level and true,
measured from established lines and levels. Provide temporary bracing or
anchors in formwork for items which are to be built into concrete, masonry or
similar construction.

B. Comply with panel fabricator's and material manufacturer’s instructions and


recommendations for installation, as applicable to project conditions and
supporting substrate. Anchor panels and other components of the work
securely in place, with provisions for thermal/structural movement.

C. Install panels with concealed fasteners and clips.

D. Installation Tolerances: Shim and align panel units within installed tolerance of
6.4 mm in 610 m on level/plumb/slope and location/line as indicated, and within
3.2 mm offset of adjoining faces and of alignment of matching profiles.

E. Install accessories including trim as indicated and in accordance with approved


shop drawings.

1. Provide folded corners at building exterior with 4.8 mm radius, trim less
bent panels.

F. Install sealants and gaskets where indicated and where required for
weatherproof performance. Provide types of sealants and gaskets indicated or,
if not otherwise indicated, types recommended by Metal Wall Panel
Manufacturer.

3.4 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Replace panels and other components of the work which have been damaged
or have deteriorated beyond successful repair by means of finish touchup or
similar minor repair procedures.

B. Cleaning: Remove protective coverings and strippable films (if any) at time in
project construction sequence which will afford greatest protection of work.
Clean finished surface as recommended by panel manufacturer and maintain in
a clean condition during construction.

C. Projection: Installer shall advise Contractor of protection and surveillance


procedures, as required to ensure that work of this section will be without
damage or deterioration at time of substantial completion.
