VOLLEYBALL

HISTORY and ORIGIN

and its EQUIPMENTS
HISTORY
In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the
Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in
Holyoke, Massachusetts. Morgan created the
game of volleyball, at that time called
Mintonette. Volleyball originated in
Massachusetts United States in 1895 as a blend
of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball.
ORIGIN OF VOLLEYBALL
Mintonette was designed to be an
indoor sport. The first rules
required for a tennis net to 6 foot
6 inches high above the floor. .
Each team could have as many
players as a team wanted. In case
of a miss serve, a second try was
allowed. Hitting the ball into the
net was a fault.
All About Volleyball
• The first game of volleyball was
held at Springfield College on July
7, 1896.
• Professor Alfred T. Halsted
changed Mintonette to Volleyball.
• Official volley ball was designed in
1900
• The United States Volleyball
Association (USVBA, now called
USA Volleyball) was formed in
1928.
• Volleyball was introduced to the
Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964.
Volleyball in the Philippines
• In 1910, The Physical Director of the YMCA,
Elwood S. Brown, first introduced volleyball to
the Philippines
• In the Philippines, an offensive style of passing
the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by
another player (the set and spike) were
introduced in 1916.
• In 1920, three hits per side and back row attack
rules were instituted.
• The Filipinos developed the "bomba" or kill,
and called the hitter a "bomberino". - Volleyball

OUTSIDE HITTER
An outside hitter is a
player who hits and
blocks from the front left
side of the court. This
person is usually the
most consistent hitter on
the team.
OPPOSITE HITTER
The right side hitter is much like an
outside hitter, but is obviously on the
right side instead of the left. A major
responsibility of the right side hitter is
to block against the opponents'
outside hitter.
MIDDLE
BLOCKER
The middle hitters/blockers are players that
can perform fast attacks that take place
close to the setter. They are specialized in
blocking, since they should attempt to block
fast attacks from the other team's middle
hitter. They are also expected to set up a
double block with either the left side or
right side hitters.
SETTER
The setter normally gets the second
out of three hits on their team. One of
their responsibilities is to set to one of
the hitters. Setters usually need to be
quick at moving around the court.
LIBBERO
A specialized defensive player who
substitutes for another player in the
back row and needs to pass really
well and play outstanding defense.
Speed, reaction time and the ability
to read the hitter are useful
qualities in addition to the desire to
get every ball

serving
Serving is the first
weapon that can
generate an immediate
point, begin a game, or
ignite an offense.
passing- receive AND DIG
Passing is when you are making the first
contact as the ball comes over the net.
Whether you’re receiving the serve,
playing a freeball, or defending an
attack, you want to pass the ball to your
teammate to help your team create an
attack.
setting
Setting is the next important part of the
pass-set-spike sequence for a successful
attack. In fact, an excellent set from a bad
pass can still result in a “kill”. The athlete
forms a triangle with the fingers and thumbs
of both hands around the ball above the
forehead
spiking
It is to hit the ball with the greatest
force possible on the third shot of a
sequence. When the ball is struck
forcefully downward, above the height
of the net, it is referred to as a "spike"
or "kill" shot.
BLOCKING
Blocking is a defensive play
made close to the net. The
object of a block is to deflect
an offensive shot directly back
toward your opponent. Block
attempts can be made by
individual players or pairs of
players.
volleyball

court, any of the net or cables outside the antennae, the referee

• It is illegal to catch, hold or throw the ball.
• A player cannot block or attack a serve from on or inside the 10-
