Reminder: For all problems (in this and following assignments) wherever a force-momentum balance
is taken, a free-body + kinetic diagram, including a clear specification of the chosen coordinate
system, possibly including the choice of origin), is expected, and points may be deducted if the
diagram is not included, is incomplete, or otherwise inadequate. In addition, the force-
momentum balance equations should be consistent with the drawn free-body + kinetic diagram
and coordinate system, and points may also be deducted if this is not the case.
1. based on problem 13-27 in the text.
The block A weighs 50 lb and rests on a plate B which weighs
150 lb, and both are placed on a plane inclined at an angle of 35°
as shown. The two blocks are linked together by a massless inex-
tensible cable through a pulley system (also massless and frict-
ionless). The surfaces between the block and plate and between
the plate and the plane do sustain frictional forces, with a kinetic
friction coefficient of 0.25 between block and plate, and 0.15
between plate and plane. The system is released from rest and
the plate moves downslope.
a) Determine the tension in the cable.
b) Determine the distance that the block A moves upslope after a time of 2 s after the system is
released.
c) Determine the time needed for the block A to move 1.5 ft on the plate.

2. based on problem 13-28 in the text.

At the instant shown, the block A which has a mass of 60 kg is moving at
a velocity of 2 m/s down a plane inclined at an angle of 20°, while being
attached by a system of pulley and cables to block B which has a mass of
35 kg. The coefficient of kinetic friction between block A and the plane is
given as 0.1. The mass of the cables and pulleys are negligible, as are any
frictional effects at the pulleys.
a) Determine the tension in the upper cable.
b) Determine the acceleration (magnitude and direction) of block A.
c) Determine the distance that block A slides before it stops.
d) Determine the acceleration (magnitude and direction) of block B.
e) Determine the acceleration (magnitude and direction) of block A
relative to block B.
