How do we find the Hypotenuse ?
Hyp. = Root ( X2 + Y2 ) = Root ( 32 + 42 ) = 5

…. and the angle 0 ?
0
0 = tan-1 ( y x) = tan-1 ( 4 3) = 53.130

Thus, the Point P can be represented as P (x, y) = P (3, 4) in
Rectangular i.e. Cartesian coordinates. OR
as P (r, 0 ) = P ( 5, 53.130) in Polar coordinate system.
To get Rec from Pol …X = 5 cos 53.130 and Y = 5 sin 53.130
This is nothing but Rec Pol OR Pol Rec conversion.
There is a Ready function for all this in scientific calculators….

Numerical Example 1 - Find the resultant Force R if …..
F1 = 40 N, F2 = 80 N, F3 = 60 N and F4 = 30 N
and the respective angles are ……
FY - Department of Engineering, Sciences and Humanities
F1 = 40 N
F2 = 80 N

measured from +ve X axis.
CCW angles are +ve
-400 F4 = 30 N CW angles are –ve
Thus, + 600 = - 3000

Ex. 1 Solution - Resolve each Force into X and Y
components and sum up.
