CLASSROOM OBSERVATION (OBS):

In each observation, all components for which there is observed evidence must be rated. Each form must
contain lesson-specific evidence for each of the components observed during a classroom observation.

This observation was: (check one)

Formal Observation (full period) Informal Observation (15 minutes minimum)

Date of Observation: 11/04/2022 Time/Period: 9:38-10:24

Component Ratings

1a (obs): Demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy 3- Effective

The teacher displays solid knowledge of the important concepts in the discipline
and how these relate to one another. The teacher demonstrates accurate
understanding of prerequisite relationships among topics. The teacher’s plans and
practice reflect familiarity with a wide range of effective pedagogical approaches in
the subject. You have displayed solid knowledge of the important concepts in the
discipline and how these relate to one another as demonstrated by your tasks that
had students relate sugar intake to a number of ailments and illnesses. You
utilized checking for understanding for example when you used "Thumbs:
up/down/sideways. You had higher order thinking questions that had students
apply their knowledge to their lives. One example was when you had students
answer: "By having this nutrition information, can we manage a healthier lifestyle?
"

1e (obs): Designing coherent instruction 4- Highly Effective

Your lesson plan was aligned to your instructional goals, and was designed to
engage students in high-level
cognitive activity. Students learned label reading and how to determine sugar
content. You included an application of knowledge when students developed the
skill of determining sugar content and converting grams to teaspoons and
teaspoons to grams. The lesson also had them apply knowledge when, you had
students answer: "By having this nutrition information, can we manage a healthier
lifestyle? " Assessment was implemented throughout the lesson through
questioning. You also had students complete the assessment packet to assess

2a: Creating an environment of respect and rapport 4- Highly Effective
Classroom interactions between the teacher and students and among students are
highly respectful, reflecting genuine warmth, caring, and sensitivity to students as
individuals. Students exhibit respect for the teacher and contribute to high levels of
civility among all members of the class. The net result is an environment where all
students feel valued and are comfortable taking intellectual risks. The class was
well behaved. Students responded to your corrections in the only two issues that
occurred. You have created a positive and supportive learning environment. At the
end of the lesson, you read the names of two students to recognize them as "Stars
of the Week"
their classmates clapped for them.

2d: Managing student behavior 3- Effective

Student behavior was generally appropriate. The teacher monitored student
behavior against established standards of conduct. As I observed your 3rd period
Health class, the class was positive and enthusiastic. There were only two
incidents of disrespect. One was when two students had their hoods on during
class and another was when you had to say, "Excuse me," when some students
were talking and not paying attention. You gave them verbal reprimand.

3b: Using questioning and discussion techniques 3- Effective

While you used some low-level questions, you posed questions designed to
promote student thinking and understanding such as, "By having this nutrition
information, can we manage a healthier lifestyle? "
You utilized "pair and share" and "Thumbs: up/down/sideways to increase
engagement in questioning.

3c: Engaging students in learning 4- Highly Effective

Virtually all students were intellectually engaged in challenging content through
well-designed learning tasks and activities that required complex thinking by
students. Your lesson engaged students starting with the Do Now to examine
sugar content and understand how packaging is designed to make products seem
better than they really are. Students were highly engaged in developing the skill
of determining sugar content and converting grams to teaspoons and teaspoons to
grams. Your visuals with sugar cubes helped students see how much sugar can
be in everyday products. The video also served to engage the class as it informed
them of the many effects of sugar.
You also engaged the class with reflection of their own sugar intake and the sugar
in products they have at home.
You further engaged students by having them apply their new knowledge to
enhancing their health.
For example, "By having this nutrition information, can we manage a healthier
lifestyle? "

3d: Using assessment in instruction 4- Highly Effective

Questions and assessments were used regularly to diagnose evidence of learning
by individual students. A variety of forms of feedback, from both teacher and
peers, was accurate and specific and advanced learning. Students self-assessed
and monitored their own progress. Questions were built into the assessment
packet. Those packets were then collected to assess student work. You utilized

questions throughout the lesson along with checking for understanding technique
that utilized "Thumbs: up/down/sideways.

4e (obs): Growing and developing professionally 3- Effective

Teacher seeks out opportunities for professional development to enhance content
knowledge and pedagogical skill. Teacher actively engages with colleagues and
supervisors in professional conversation about practice, including feedback about
practice. The teacher participates actively in assisting other educators and looks
for ways to contribute to the profession. In your most recent observation I noticed
you incorporated some of the ideas we discussed to enhance student learning
such as applying their knowledge to home life. During professional development
work days you were enthusiastic and receptive to enhancing your pedagogy and
the curriculum. You work well with your colleagues and support them when
needed.

* As students worked in groups, you practiced concurrent assessment and instruction during their skill
acquisition.
* You had students reflect on the tricks marketers use to make products seem healthier or less harmful.
* You posed questions designed to promote student thinking and understanding.
* You utilized "pair and share" and "Thumbs: up/down/sideways to increase engagement.
* Your visuals with sugar cubes helped students see how much sugar can be in everyday products.
* The video also served to engage the class as it informed them of the many effects of sugar.
* You engaged the class with reflection of their own sugar intake and the sugar in products they have at
home.
* You further engaged students by having them apply their new knowledge to enhancing their health.
* You continually assessed class knowledge through questioning and the assessment packet.

Areas that can help your students Grow:

1. Students can research the topic of the week as an assignment and share out the new research. Offering
a differentiated assignment based on values. For example, " Choose one: Research the affects of sugar on
your athletic ability, mental ability, hobby, academics, career, your income, healthcare, the economy or any
illness that runs in the family. Then they can be grouped by topic and share. Other groups can ask questions
to compare and contrast their research topic. This can be applied to any topic.
2. The class was generally well behaved. You effectively addressed two minor behavioral issues. Discuss
with students that when they are off topic or wasting class time by having to be spoken to about hoods, ear-
pods or talking about unrelated topics or when inappropriate, they will lose points from their classwork grade.
It helps to give the student a restorative extra credit task to make up for the loss of points. Of course any
repeated violations should result in a parent contact and I can speak to the student to help support your
efforts.
3. Get parents involved in student and family health. Provide parents with resources and handouts to help
support their child and the entire family.

I look forward to seeing your students continue to develop by your collaboration, planning, implementation,
and reflection of quality lessons. Your continual growth as an educator is commendable.

Sincerely,

Mark D'Elia
