Video A : Introduction to Conversation Introduction to talking about location (singular)

Hello and welcome

to your MES eLesson.
I'm Virginia.

Today you’re going

to learn the what and
the how of talking about places.

Let’s start with “WHAT.”

What are these

statements and
answers used for?

They are used to

talk about something’s location, for example:

“It’s in the back.”

Native speakers use the contraction of “it is:” “it’s.” You can use “it”
to talk about one thing.

Good. Now, let’s learn “HOW.” How do you use these statements and answers?

First, you need to

study your vocabulary
and memorize your prepositions.
Remember, native
speakers use prepositions
to begin prepositional phrases.
These phrases talk
about location, and
need to be memorized because they are
not governed by
any strict rules.

In this eLesson,
we’ll study this set of commonly used
location prepositions:
· in
· on
· over
· under
· above
· below
· across
· next to
· in front of
· behind

To make a complete prepositional phrase, add a noun to the preposition

to describe a location,
for example:

on + the desk

If you want to talk about something’s location,

you can say,
for example,

It’s on the table.

It’s in the yard.

Keep in mind that

your facial expression
is very important.
Watch me – for example,

“It’s in front of the house.”

“It’s on the top floor.”
“It’s next to the TV.”

Let’s try saying

those three statements together! Please repeat
after me:

“It’s in front of the house.”

-
-
Great job! Remember to think about your facial expression!

Let’s do another. Please repeat after me:

“It’s on the top floor.”

-
-
Good! Remember
to follow my intonation!

Let’s do one more! Please repeat after me:

“It’s next to the book.”

-
-
Excellent!

We’ll practice these examples and

more in Video B.

<Quick Review>

Now, let’s review!

First, what are these statements and
answers used for?
They are used to talk
about something’s
location.
Second, how do you
use these statements
and answers?
You use them by
knowing the
different phrases
and the
vocabulary.

Well done! Let’s move

on to Video B to really practice making
your own answers!

Remember to
keep on reviewing
your vocabulary.
I’m Virginia! See you next time!
