TEXT A A story Behind a Photograph

My name is Thomas Hawk and I work as a

photo-journalist: I use photos instead of
words to tell a news story. I want to tell you
the story about one particular photo that I
5 took last week.

I was visiting Portland, which is in the

north-west of the US. I’d just eaten in a
diner and I had walked to the Burnside
Bridge, an area where many homeless
10 people sleep at night. It was already dark and I was taking some pictures of the bridge.
While I was doing this, I was wearing headphones and having a good time listening to
music. As I was walking across the bridge, a man came up to me and said something. I
couldn’t make out what he was saying because of the music. But I didn’t take off my
headphones. I just told him that I didn’t have any money.
15 He gave me a despairing look. I got the feeling that, understandably, he was annoyed
by my attitude and that I had made a bad impression on him. So, eventually, I decided
to check out what he was saying and I took my headphones off. I then realised that I’d
been completely wrong. The man wasn’t asking for money. He just wanted me to take
his photo! I felt very embarrassed. No, I felt more than embarrassed. I felt ashamed. I
20 hadn’t shown in this man any respect or sympathy.

After I had taken the photo, he said goodbye. Over the next few days, I couldn’t stop
thinking about what had happened. The point was that I’d treated this man very
shabbily. What’s more, I couldn’t get in touch with him to send him the photo because I
hadn’t asked him for his address. I didn’t even know his name!
25 They say that we can all learn from our mistakes. Well, I made a really bad one that
night and it proved to me that I needed to change my attitude. I just hope that this
experience makes me a better person in the future, and that it teaches me to have
respect for all people, whatever their appearance.
