In May 2021, the story of a 10-year-old farm boy from Sultan Kudarat went viral online. Reymark
received praises from the viewers for working tirelessly so he could put food on the table for his
family. However, beside the praises, there is another side of the story in which Filipinos could
see the truth behind the viral story and where they criticize and express their frustration to the
government and to those who romanticized the issue of child labor.
This injustice robbed the children of a period in their lives where they should experience
education and prepare for adult life while under the protection and care of their parents.

Reymark’s story is only one of the many instances of this harsh reality in the country. If
anything, his story vividly illustrated the factors why child labor continues to exist. Millions of
children who are born into poverty, broken families, and ingrained traditions are the common
victims. Familial obligations would bind generations into a never-ending chain of servitude.

In light of the social injustice at hand, Filipinos have these mindset and misconceptions that
child labour is equivalent to being a hardworking and a good, devoted child to his parent. They
don't see the unfairness it brought to a child and overlook the fact that the inefficiency and a
corrupted system play a major role in why this kind of problem is prevalent. For instance the
story of Reymark, a 10 year old farm boy from Sultan Kudarat who worked tirelessly in order to
put food on the table, that went viral last 2021 where he received praises from the netizens.
However, beside the recognition, it divides the opinion of the people where

CAUSES / FACTORS

According to experts, the main reasons for the emergence of child labor are unhealthy family life
and economic deprivation. Families strained by financial difficulties cannot cope with the
increasing demands of their children and sometimes even fail to provide them with adequate
nutrition.
Nearly 1 in 10 children are subjected to child labor worldwide, with some forced into hazardous
work through trafficking.
THERE ARE MANY CAUSES / FACTORS OF CHILD LABOR AND HERE ARE SOME OF IT:
POVERTY
-it is one of the most essential causes of child labor. Children who were born in poverty,
for any reason, grow as unskilled workers and find themselves forced to child labor to survive
with their families.

NATURAL DISASTERS & CLIMATE CHANGE

-in rural areas, farmers who see their crops destroyed on account of climate changes
have no other choice but to send their children out to work.
