1. INTRODUCTION
Isomerization (PENEX DIH) Process Unit (Unit 03) consists of the Isomerization Section
(Makeup Gas Section & FEED and Regeneration Section & Reactor Section) and the
Deisohexanizer DIH Section. UOP supplied the technology for the unit.
The scope of the Isomerization (PENEX DIH) Process Unit (Unit 03) is to process the
light Naphtha from the Naphtha Hydrotreating Unit (Unit 02) in order to produce
Isomerate with minimum 88 RONC using DIH process and utilizing hydrogen rich gas
from the CCR Platforming Unit (Unit 04).

The Isomerization (PENEX DIH) Process Unit will yield the following products:

a) Isomerate to storage and Polynaphtha Unit (Unit 09)

b) Fuel gas to FG network system

2.1 ISOMERIZATION SECTION

2.1.1 Makeup Gas Section

Makeup hydrogen gas from the CCR Platforming Unit (Unit 04) is heated in the
Methanator Feed-Effluent Exchanger (03-E-004) and Methanator Heater (03-E-005)
before entering the Methanator Reactor (03-R-002). The Methanator Reactor (03-R-002)
converts any oxygen containing compounds into water, which is removed in the Makeup
Gas Driers (03-DR-002A/B). The Methanator Reactor effiuent is cooled in the Methanator

Feed-Effiuent Exchanger (03-E-004) and the Methanator Effluent Cooler (03-E-006). The
cooled Methanator Reactor effluent gas is compressed up to the required Penex Reactor
operating pressure by a reciprocating Makeup Gas Compressors (03-K-001A/B). Makeup
gas pressure is controlled by a spillback valve in the line from the discharge drum to the
suction drum inlet. The compressed makeup gas is then sent to the Makeup Gas Driers
(03-DR-002A/B). The makeup gas must be dried in order to protect the Penex catalyst

which is permanently deactivated by water. The two Makeup Gas Driers (03-DR-002A/B)
when referring to
the Makeup operate in series, with the gas flow in each drier in an upflow direction. Makeup gas from
Compressor the driers is routed to the Cold Combined Feed Exchanger (03-E-008) in the Reactor
suction drum & Exchanger Circuit. The dried hydrogen gas is also used for pressure control at the Feed

not mentioned operated in a similar manner as the Makeup Gas Driers (03-DR-001A/B). The dried feed
stream is then routed to the Feed Surge Drum (03-V-001).

2.1.3 Feed Surge Drum

The Feed Surge Drum (03-V-001) provides liquid feed surge capacity for the Penex
Reactors (03-R-001A/B) so that a constant reactor feed rate can be maintained. The Feed
Surge Drum pressure is controlled by using blanketing gas from the outlet of the Makeup
Gas Driers (03-DR-002A/B).

2.1.4 Reactor Heat Exchanger Circuit

The dried liquid feed from the Feed Surge Drum (03-V-001) is pumped by the Charge
Pumps (03-P-001 A/B) through the reactor heat exchanger circuit. The reactor heat
exchanger circuit consists of the Cold Combined Feed Exchanger (03-E-008), the Hot
Combined Feed Exchanger (03-E-009) and the Charge Heater (03-E-010).

Prior to the entry of the liquid hydrocarbon into the Cold Combined Feed Exchanger (03-
E-008), it is combined with the hydrogen makeup gas stream. The combined mixed
hydrocarbon-hydrogen stream passes through the heat exchanger circuit in the order
previously mentioned.

The Cold Combined Feed Exchanger (03-E-008) is equipped with a bypass which can be
used to regulate the amount of exchanger feed preheat. The combined feed is further
preheated by exchanger with the lead Penex Reactor effluent in the Hot Combined Feed
Exchanger (03-E-009).

A small quantity of catalyst promoter (perchloroethylene) is added upstream of the Charge

Heater (03-E-010). This promoter is pumped into the process by the Chloride Injection
Pumps (03-P-012A/B). The catalyst promoter is supplied by Chloride Package (03-PK-
001) then stored in a nitrogen blanketed Chloride Injection Drum (03-V-004).The
combined feed is brought up to the desired Penex Reactor inlet temperature in the
Charge Heater (03-E-010) which is heated by HP steam. After exiting the Charge
Heater (03-E-010), the heated combined stream then flows to the lead Penex Reactor
(03-R-001A).

2.1.5 Penex Reactors (03-R-001A/B)

After exiting the Charge Heater (03-E-010), the heated combined feed stream flows to the
lead Penex Reactor. Upon exiting the lead Penex Reactor, the reactor effluent stream
then passes to the Hot Combined Feed Exchanger (03-E-009) where the lead Penex
Reactor's heat of reaction is partially removed. Temperature control is accomplished by
controlling the amount of effluent by passing the heat exchanger.

The partially cooled reactor effluent stream is then routed to the lag Penex Reactor
where the final process reactions are completed. After exiting the lag Penex Reactor, the
reactor effluent stream is then routed through the tube side of the Cold Combined Feed
Exchanger (03-E-008) and then to the Stabilizer (03-T-001) through the pressure control
valve 03-PV-0020 that maintains the Penex Reactor system pressure.

2.1.6 Stabilizer (03-T-001)

The purpose of this column is to separate any dissolved hydrogen, HCl and light gases
(C1, C2, and C3's) from the isomerate. The feed to the Stabilizer is routed from the Cold
Combined Feed Exchanger (03-E-008) and heat exchanged with the Stabilizer Feed-
Bottoms exchanger (03-E-011) before entering the Stabilizer column.

The Stabilizer column is reboiled by the Stabilizer Reboiler (03-E-013).

The Stabilizer column overhead vapor, consisting of the light hydrocarbon components of
the column's feed, is routed to the air cooled Stabilizer Condenser (03-EA-001) followed
by the water cooled Stabilizer Trim Condenser (03-E-012) and then to the Stabilizer
Receiver (03-V-005). To maintain pressure control on the column, gas from the receiver is
vented on pressure control to the Net Gas Scrubber (03-T-002). Liquid is pumped from
the receiver with the Stabilizer Reflux Pumps (03-P-002A/B). All liquid from the Stabilizer
Receiver (03-V-005) is refluxed to the column top tray.

The Stabilizer bottoms product is routed through the Stabilizer Feed-Bottoms Exchanger
(03-E-011) to the Deisohexanizer (03-T-003).

2.1.7 Net Gas Scrubber (03-T-002)

The Stabilizer net overhead gas flows into the bottom section of the Net Gas Scrubber
(03-T-002) to remove hydrogen chloride. The scrubbed gas leaves the top of the Column
and goes to fuel gas network system (Unit 44)

10wt% of Make-up caustic is pumped from the Caustic Header to the bottom reservoir
section of the Net Gas Scrubber (03-T-002) when caustic addition is required. The caustic
in the bottom reservoir section of the column is pumped by the Caustic Circulation Pumps
(03-P-004A/B) to the top of the packed caustic wash section of the column where a
counter current contact with the rising acidic gas is made. Caustic is also continuously
circulated to the distributor under the packed caustic wash section.

Above the caustic wash section of the Net Gas Scrubber (03-T-002) is a water wash

2.2 DEISOHEXANIZER (DIH) SECTION

The purpose of the Deisohexanizer (DIH, 03-T-003) column is to recover product iso-
hexane and pentanes from the stabilized Penex Reactor products. The Deisohexanizer
(03-T-003) separates the Stabilizer bottoms into three streams: net overhead liquid, lower
side draw and net bottoms. The Deisohexanizer (03-T-003) column is reboiled by the
Deisohexanizer Reboiler (03-E-016).
