Background of the study

Introduction

The global community has increasingly recognized the pressing need for

sustainable waste management practices to mitigate environmental degradation and

address resource scarcity. As a response to mounting concerns over waste generation

and its detrimental impacts on ecosystems, governments, organizations, and

communities worldwide are exploring innovative strategies to promote recycling and

reduce landfill waste. One such strategy gaining traction is the implementation of

community recycling programs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the economic

and environmental feasibility of assessing a community recycling program in Poblacion

Tupi South Cotabato.

With a growing population and consumption rates, Poblacion Tupi South

Cotabato faces significant challenges related to waste management, including

escalating landfill costs, limited landfill space, and environmental pollution. Introducing a

comprehensive recycling program presents an opportunity to address these challenges

while promoting resource conservation, pollution prevention, and community

engagement. this study will also examine the environmental impacts of implementing a

community recycling program. By diverting recyclable materials from landfills, such a

program has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve natural

resources, and mitigate pollution. An environmental assessment will evaluate the

potential benefits in terms of energy savings, reduced carbon emissions, conservation of

raw materials, and improvements in air and water quality. Furthermore, this study will

explore the social and behavioral dimensions of community recycling, including public

awareness, participation rates, and stakeholder engagement. Understanding community

attitudes towards recycling, as well as barriers and incentives for participation, will

through reduced waste disposal fees, revenue generation from the sale of recyclable

materials, and job creation in the recycling industry.

 Examine the environmental impacts of implementing a community recycling program,

including reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and natural

resource depletion associated with waste disposal and production of virgin materials.
