Internal Assessment 2080

Subject: Soil Mechanics Semester: V Program: BE (Civil)

Full Marks: 20 Pass Marks: 08 Time: 1 hour

Answer FOUR questions. All questions carry equal marks. Candidates are required to answer the questions
in their own words as far as practicable.

1. Soil is excavated from a borrow pit which has a density of 18 KN/m3 and water content of 15%. The
specific gravity of soil particle is 2.70. The soil is compacted so that water content is 18% and dry density
is 16 KN/m3. For 1000 Cum of soil infill, estimate the quantity of the soil to be excavated from the borrow
pit.
2. A layer of sand 5m lies beneath a clay stratum 4m thick and above a thick shale. In order to determine the
permeability of the sand a well was driven to the top of the shale and water pumped out at the rate of 10*
10-3 Cum/sec. Two observation wells were driven through the clay at 15m and 30m from the pump well
and draw downs in the wells were found to be 2.5m and 2.0m respectively. Determine the coefficient of
permeability.
3. A soil deposit has two layers. The top layer is 4m thick and bottom layer is 5m thick. The water table is
5m from the surface and zone of capillary action is 1m above the water table. Draw the diagrams showing
the variation of total stress, pore water pressure and effective stress. Take unit weight = 16KN/m3,
saturated unit weight= 21KN/m3, unit weight of water= 10KN/m3
4. A sample of sand was tested in a triaxial machine. If angle of shearing resistance was 320 and the confined
pressure was 80KN/m2, determine the deviator stress at which the sample failed.
5. A stratum of clay is 4m thick and has initial overburden pressure of 95 KN/m2 at its middle. Determine
the final settlement due to an increase of pressure 50 KN/m2. The clay has pre consolidation pressure
110KN/m2. Take e0=1.30, Cr= 0.05, Cc=0.25.
