For those who are used to having meat every meal, it is hard to imagine replacing meat with
other foods. Nonetheless, a relatively new trend called “plant-based diet” has been around the globe
in recent years. An increasing number of people are willing to give up on meat, and have a variety of
plants instead.
By definition, plant-based diet is an eating pattern which focuses on plants, including not only
vegetables and fruits, but also nuts, seeds, oils, beans and whole grains. Note that the point of the diet
is not to be a vegan or discard meat ever since, but to shift the role of meat and “use it as a garnish a
centerpiece,” wrote Harvard Health Publishing. Particularly, people with diabetes are highly
recommended to plant-based diet. Numerous studies have indicated that animal-based diet would
result in high cholesterol, high blood sugar and obesity. Thus, some of them decide to adopt the new
method as a/an , and most of their general health has indeed improved as time goes by.
plant-based diet, there are still plenty of diets that are prevalent, such as Ketogenic diet and
gluten-free diet. Some of them change their diet in order to lose weight, while the others do so to
become healthier. No matter the reason is, the golden rule is not to go to extremes, but to get into the
new habit step by step.

Elliot Page, who is best known for the role in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, has announced that
he is a transgender and has changed his name, Ellen Page, to the current one.
The 33-year-old Canadian actor was for Oscar for the performance in Jason Reitman’s Juno in
2007. What followed was the famous role as Ariadne, the dream designer in Inception. However,
after he came out as gay woman in 2014, her job offers were limited. Even so, Elliot Page thought it
more to speak for LGBTQ than anything else.
In the announcement, Elliot Page did not just the bright side of coming out. Rather, he admitted
that “My joy is real, but it is also fragile.” He honestly pointed out the fact that more than 40
transgenders have been murdered in 2020 alone. Though it is delightful to declare who he wants to
be, the discrimination and are still there, waiting to be addressed, changed and .
Today, “gender equality” is not limited to the equality between men and women anymore. It
should be applied everyone no matter which group they think they belong to. As Elliot Page said on
social media, “I will offer whatever I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society.”
Indeed, what matters is not the appearance, gender or any other visible factors, but people know who
they really are and how to love themselves and others.

Narcissus is a figure in Greek mythology who falls in love with his own reflection. In modern
English, the term narcissist has come to refer to those who love themselves, maybe a little too much.
Narcissism is not always bad. (1) After all, someone who does not think much of himself is not
likely to be taken seriously by others.
On the other hand, if taken to extremes, narcissistic traits would be considered signs of Narcissistic
Personality Disorder (NPD). People with NPD may come across as being over-conceited, pompous and
they have an immense craving for attention and admiration. (2) The famous German dictator Adolf
Hitler is a classic example of a narcissist whose ego went a bit too far. He considered himself to be
superior, had a never-ending appetite for power and sought to secure it in any way he could. (3) As
one story goes, he once ordered the government to buy copies of his autobiography to give to newlyweds
as state wedding gifts, creating hefty royalties for himself. His devotion to glorifying himself didn’t stop
here. (4) However, recent research has shown that he was given the honor not because of his
contribution, but because of his general likability with officers. Leaders who are confident of themselves
may accomplish big goals, but if they do not know of their own limitations, which all humans have, they
may lose track of reality and become a disaster instead.

(A) Various accounts of Hitler’s life in Britannica lend themselves to demonstrating the signs of his
NPD.
(B) It was said that he constantly touted himself for winning the Iron Cross First Class medal for his
service in WWI.
(C) Referred to as “useful narcissism,” a healthy dose of this self-affirmation is actually necessary
when people are striving to succeed in their career and relationship.
(D) This trait, though seem more annoying than harmful, could also mean a serious lack of empathy
for others.

(C) 31. (A) (B) (C) (D)

此句上下文在介紹,自戀不全然是壞事,且下一句鼓勵人們不能看輕自
己,因此選(C)最適合。
(D) 32. (A) (B) (C) (D)

因此選(D),帶出介紹一個沒有同理心的人。
(A) 33. (A) (B) (C) (D)
此句應該帶出希特勒所做的事情,因此選(A)。
(B) 34. (A) (B) (C) (D)
由於下一句介紹希特勒得到某個殊榮的真正原因,因此本格應選
(B),介紹希特勒得到某個榮譽。

The Amazon rainforest used to be recognized as “Lungs of the earth,” for it provides 20 percent
of earth’s oxygen, could adjust the climate and slow down the pace of global warming.
Yet, the latest report released by National Institute for Space Research (INPE) shows that
Amazon deforestation surges to 12-year-high. Several environmentalists blamed on the president of
Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro. During his reign, Bolsonaro has set his sights on dragging the nation out of
poverty. Therefore, he prioritizes economic development over environmental protection, and
encourages agriculture and mining activities. Hectares of forests were burned down due to human
actions rather than wildfires, and the cleared area of the rainforest every minute is equivalent of a
football pitch.
The damages inflicted by deforestation are beyond measure. Burning the forests would not only
greatly increase carbon emissions, lead to rising global temperatures, but also reduce the biodiversity
in the rainforest, which is often deemed as the most precious asset. Last but not least, deforestation is
likely to release virus that was attached to the bodies of animals or plants. Without their original
habitats, the animals which carry deadly virus would leave for another place, and spread the disease
along the way.
Unfortunately, Brazil is not the only nation plagued by deforestation. There are three areas
particularly in danger: Amazon, Southeast Asia and Central Africa. The problems cannot be solved as
long as there are still food shortage and extreme poverty. That’s why only through the cooperation
among international community can deforestation be reduced and even halted.

(D) 35. What is the keyword of this passage? (A) Brazil (B) Global warming (C)
Amazon (D) Deforestation
keyword 必須能夠貫穿全文,因此選擇(D) deforestation 伐林。
(B) 36. The underlined phrase “set one’s sights on” in the second paragraph is closest in
meaning to “____”? (A) Look at something carefully. (B) Be aiming to do
something (C) Build up something memorable. (D) Give up on doing something.
set one’s sights on something 意指「下定決心達成……;企圖獲得…
…」。
(C) 37. Which of the following is FALSE according to the passage? (A) Apart from
Amazon, there are still other areas plagued by deforestation. (B) Burning down the
rainforests would cause rising global temperatures. (C) Lungs of the earth provides
eighty percent of the oxygen on earth. (D) President Bolsonaro values economy more
than ecology.
(A)出現在末段前兩句。(B)出現在第三段的第二句。 (C) 由第一段
可知應為百分之二十。(D)出現在第二段的第三句。
(D) 38. “During 1994 and 1995, the double increase of deforestation was attributed to
accidental forest burning rather than active logging.” Which of the following
graph/chart might correspond to the description mentioned above?
(A)
(B)

(C)

(D)

本題判讀重點在於引言中提到的時間(1994 到 1995)及雙倍成長
(double increase)的幅度。

第 39.~42.為題組
Have you ever had a really bad day? Take it and multiply it by 10 and it would be the bad luck of
USS William D. Porter on November 14, 1943.
USS William D. Porter (DD-579) was a destroyer manufactured during World War II, and was
nicknamed “Willie Dee.” Though it was meant to be a menacing weapon to its enemy, Willie Dee
was regarded as “the unluckiest destroyer in the US” due to constant accidents.
To begin with, before Willie Dee was assigned a secret mission, it had accidentally smashed its
companion ship, which was surely not a good start. Two days after the mission was on, an extreme
loud noise was made because one of Willie Dee’s explosives dropped into the sea unexpectedly. Note
that remaining silent is of paramount importance when it comes to “secret mission”. Subsequently, a
weird wave swept one of the sailors away and he was nowhere to be found. Despite all these, the
worst was yet to come.
On November 14, 1943, Willie Dee had a drill proposed by President Roosevelt. According to
the standard procedures, the torpedoes have to be de-primed before the drill starts. However, the chief
torpedoman Lawton Dawson forgot to remove one of the primers, and caused it to fire at Iowa, where
the president and other senior executives were all onboard. Before the torpedo hit Iowa, Willie Dee
was supposed to signal Iowa to shift the direction right away. Yet, the unexperienced sailor sent the
wrong messages, again. Eventually, Iowa turned away from the torpedo successfully in the last few
seconds, but the president was nearly killed, and all the crew members were ordered to stop at
Bermuda for an inquiry.
In the end, Willie Dee sank on June 10, 1945 during an encounter with a Japanese bomber. In
spite of all the unfortunate incidents surrounding its serving life, its way of ending was glorious, with
no loss in its last courageous mission.

(D) 39. What is the passage mainly about? (A) The origin of Pacific War (B) How a ship
destroyed a nation. (C) The battle between Iowa and Willie Dee. (D) The history
of a destroyer nicknamed Willie Dee.
通篇都在介紹波特驅逐艦倒楣的歷史,故選(D)。
(D) 40. According to the passage, which of the following statement is true? (A) The prime
minister of the US was nearly killed in an accident. (B) USS William D. Porter has
served more than 10 years. (C) One of the experienced sailors made the wrong signal
to Iowa. (D) The destroyer Willie Dee had a glorious ending.
(A) prime minister 應改為 president (B)應改為 about two years (C)
experienced 應改為 unexperienced。
(B) 41. Which of the following is closest to the meaning of “paramount” in the third
paragraph? (A) Nothing. (B) More important than anything else. (C) Huge in
size. (D) Made or done publicly.
由「保持無聲在秘密任務中是至關重要的」可判斷 paramount 應形容
「極其重要的」,故選 (B)。
(A) 42. The passage is most likely taken from ______. (A) a history book about ships. (B)
a review of an action movie. (C) an introduction of World War I (D) a novel about
US Navy
本篇章出現詳細、較不為人知的船艦歷史,故最可能出現於與船艦相
關的歷史書上,答案選 (A)。

第 43.~46.為題組
It is believed that 2020 is the first year of podcast in Taiwan. Truly, a variety of free and
informative podcasts sprang up like mushrooms after rain. But where does it come from and how
does it become popular? Let’s first dig into the background of the public’ new favorite—podcast!
The word “podcast” is the combination of “ipod” and “broadcast.” It is a form of digital audio
files, allowing users to download the episodes and listen to it whether online or offline. The content
varies greatly, including news, book review and even finance. Before podcast gained its popularity in
Taiwan, it had been prevalent in Europe and the United States for quite a while. BBC radio, the
Guardian, NPR are some of the most listened ones.
When the wave of podcast swept over Taiwan, it took a slightly different form. The most popular
podcasts are not as serious as the foreign ones. Instead, the style is usually sarcastic, and the content
can be informative while entertaining at the same time. Take Bilingguo News for example. This top-
ranked podcast would use both English and Mandarin to talk about international news in an
interesting way. The two hosts Kylie and Ken would discuss the latest news and share their opinions
on hot issues. What’s more, their standpoints would collide with each other now and then; still, they
seek for rational discussion to understand the opposed side better.
Nevertheless, podcast in Taiwan is still at an early age of development. One of the reasons is that
the most popular ones mostly put emphasis on culture, news and politics review. Other fields such as
literature, history, technology, music and art are yet to be developed. The other reason is the relatively
high threshold of digital skills. To listen to the podcast on smartphones, listeners have to download
APP such as SoundOn or Spotify, find a channel that you’re interested in, and finally click to listen to
the episode. For those unfamiliar with digital skills, they have to overcome several obstacles before
they start to listen.
In conclusion, podcast is still finding its way in Taiwan, but it undoubtedly had a fresh start. If
you haven’t heard or used the emerging media yet, why not take a look at the podcast list, choose one
program and give a try? You would gain a new perspective and explore a world that you’ve never
known.
