1.1. GENERAL
A Basic Vehicle System Euro (BVS-Euro) provides a two-way wireless identification and data communica-
tion link between a vehicle and stationary equipment. This system is also indicated as VECOM; Vehicle
Communication. The system is designed for applications in public transport and fleet management sys-
tems such as:
automatic switch point control;
priority request at intersections;
automatic vehicle tracking systems;
exchange of short data messages at high vehicle speeds;
exchange of large quantities of data with stationary vehicles (only with VECOM way station);
passenger information systems at stops.
The BVS-Euro system is fully compatible with both VETAG and VECOM identification systems, so it can
be used within existing VETAG and VECOM infrastructures.

– run number

Two BVS-Euro systems can be installed in each car of a train. The order of the cars and the direction in
which they travel does not affect system functionality. In normal operation only the front system of the first
car must be switched on and all other systems must be switched off.
When a BVS-Euro system receives an interrogation message from a VETAG or VECOM station, it will
react by sending the vehicle’s identification message. The identification message will include a manual
direction code and a ready to start code that corresponds with the position of the switches.
The driver panel is a BC2100 unit. It will be denoted as driver panel in this manual.
The system is powered by the onboard power supply of the vehicle in which it is installed.

The driver panel is the interface to the driver. The driver can use the driver panel to enter the configured
items of the identification code. On the display of the driver panel the identification code is shown and an
indication is given when the transponder is over a loop. In some applications also messages received from
a way station are be displayed on the driver panel.
1.2.2. VCU-Combo
The Vehicle Communication Unit (VCU) is a processor unit that handles the communication over the in-
ductive link (VECOM link) which includes modulation, demodulation, error detection and protocol process-
ing.
The VCU is provided with a number of parallel input to which switches can be connected for manual direc-
tion indication and ready to start indication. Also one output is provided to control a lamp. The lamp is lit
when the transponder is over a loop.
An RS232 compatible serial channel is provided on the VCU to control the unit. The vehicle identification
code is set through the serial channel (by the driver panel).
1.2.3. Transponder
The transponder is a rugged send and receive antenna with a build in amplifier. The transponder is suited
for mounting under a vehicle. The transponder has a fixed cable for supply voltage and communication
with the VCU. The housing of the transponder meets IP67.
The default state of the transponder is passive, and it will only transmit a signal when activated by a VETAG
or VECOM communication loop.
The transponder is available in two different models. One has identical dimension to that of a VETAG trans-
ponder. This simplifies mounting when upgrading a VETAG vehicle system to a VECOM communication
system. The other model is a flat model, specially designed for vehicles with little space between bottom
and road surface (e.g. low floor vehicles).
The purpose of the BVS-Euro system is to send vehicle identification data to VECOM and VETAG way
stations upon a request from the way station. The BVS-Euro system is an automatic system that does not
require user intervention. Yet, in order to function correctly, the system requires the entry of the vehicle
identification code. Depending on the application a choice can be made of the items from the identification
code that must be entered by the driver and the items that are initially set at installation of the unit.
The identification code which is transmitted to VECOM way stations consists of:
line number (0..999);
route series/vehicle service number (0..999);
staff number (0..999999);
fleet number (0..99999);
vehicle type (city bus, city tram, region bus, region tram);
category (fixed at 0);
manual direction code;
ready to start code (RTS).
The identification code which is transmitted to VETAG way stations consists of:
line number (city: 1..99, region: 1..399);
route series/vehicle service number (city: 1..39, region: 1..79);
vehicle type (city bus, city tram, region bus);
category (fixed at 0);
manual direction code;
ready to start (RTS).
In most cases the line and route number are entered by the driver of the train via the driver panel. This
is done at the beginning of each new service or any other point where the identification code has to change.
Only the VECOM identification code must be entered by the driver. The VETAG identification code is auto-
matically derived from this.
The fleet number and vehicle type are, in most cases, initialized during system configuration. It can also
be entered through the driver panel, however, this is protected by means of a service key which is only
available for service personnel.

2.5. COMMUNICATION
The driver panel and the VCU-Combo are provided with a RS232 half duplex communication channel (sig-
nals NRXD, NTXD and XV00 on connector X1 of the VCU-Combo and signals DIAG_RX, DIAG_TX and
V0REF on connector X1 of the driver panel). The communication channel is set to:
9600 bps;
1 start bit;
8 data bits;
1 stop bit;
no parity.
The information exchange between VCU-Combo and driver panel is done with data blocks (frames) with
a protocol bases on ISO1745. A description of this protocol is given in the manual “VECOM – VCU-proto-
col”, publication number 9586 115 30110.
For the use of leads and cables the following recommendations are given:
Leads 0,75 mm2
Cables 0,5 mm2 shielded
The leads and cables should be fastened at regular intervals to ensure that they do not rub against sharp
objects.
2.7. CONNECTIONS
Connection cables and connections for switch etc. are connected by means of screw blocks which are
provided by the company which performs the installation. For screw blocks and connectors the contact
material must be suitable for the diameter of the copper wire for the insulation used. See specification of
the appropriate system part.
The contact material must have a covering of 0,8 µm gold over nickel. The contact material must be of good
quality and possess sufficient contact power in order to guarantee a reliable, long-term electrical connec-
tion.
The contact material must have a shrink-fit capability for insulation purposes. If this is not the case the
individual wires in the housing must be fastened securely to protect them from any traction forces in the
connection.
