Plays and Playwrights
Elizabethan Plays and Playwrights were extremely popular

during the Elizabethan era, and many of their plays are still

performed today. The most famous of the Elizabethan

playwrights was William Shakespeare who has been credited

with many famous Elizabethan plays. the other very famous

Elizabethan playwrights were:

● William Shakespeare (1564-1616)


● Christopher Marlowe (1564 - 1593)
● Francis Beaumont (1584 - 1616)
● John Fletcher (1579 - 1625)
● Thomas Middleton (1580 - 1627)
● Thomas Kyd (1558 - 1594)
● Ben Jonson (1572-1637)

The Globe Theatre
William Shakespeare were performed.
The original Globe was an Elizabethan
theatre which opened in Autumn
1599 in Southwark, on the south bank
of the Thames.

It was one of many big theatres that


was located in the area, the others
being the Swan, the Rose and The
Hope.

In 1576 the Elizabethan Theatre


became permanently public, it was
erected by the actor James Burbage.
The building boom continued until
the end of the century, 'the Globe',
where Shakespeare's plays were first
performed, was built in 1599 with
lumber from the demolished Theatre.

2. Colour coded flags were used outside the theatre to


advertise the type of play that was going to play– a red
flag for a history play, white for a comedy play and
black for a tragedy play.

3. There was no seating in the theater. The cheapest place


to sit was in front of the stage.

4. Elizabethan theatres were also used for bear baiting,


gambling and for immoral purposes.

5. Women’s parts were played by boys.

6. The theatre mostly had violent plays.

7. The most famous playwright in the theatre was


William Shakespeare.
