Solutions from a proud maritime tradition

naval
Pioneering marine power

Since pioneering two of the most important technological

advances in marine propulsion of the 20th century – the use of
gas turbines for surface marine propulsion and the development
of nuclear propulsion for the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet -
Rolls-Royce has become a world leading provider of marine
systems.
The enlarged naval marine business of Rolls-Royce now
includes established products from leading names including
Bird-Johnson, Brown Brothers, Kamewa, Michell Bearings and
Clarke Chapman. When combined with our commercial marine
business it represents the greatest accumulation of marine
propulsion, engineering and hydrodynamic knowledge, skills
and expertise in the world. This technological strength and an
unrivalled range of products and services, proven in the highly
competitive commercial marine market, gives Rolls-Royce the
ability to design, build, deliver and support fully integrated ship
systems, tailored to meet specific customer requirements.
Our position and reputation for excellence derive from our
ability to focus on – and respond to - the needs of our customers.
We understand those needs and are determined to deliver world-
leading solutions with the highest standards of service.

The marine Spey is the most efficient aero-derivative
gas turbine currently at sea. It is in service in nine ship
classes and has accumulated over 500,000 hours at sea.

Total systems approach provides the optimum package. Today’s complex

propulsion equipment demands the highest skills in design, integration and
control. We ensure that whole-ship propulsion and power requirements are
optimised to provide the most cost-effective solution.
Effective support to reduce the cost of ownership. Our early participation
in contractorised platform support contracts and equipment overhaul gives us
unrivalled competencies in managing warship availability and through-life
support costs. Through the application of pragmatic ILS techniques we design
for supportability and provide innovative, long term and fixed price support
packages.

while meeting the ever-growing demands of safety and quality.
These achievements are the result of technical excellence, painstaking attention
to engineering detail and the ability to provide rapid and innovative responses
to operating challenges – competencies that rely on the flexible skills that make
up our integrated marine propulsion capability.

The power behind marine propulsion

Rolls-Royce supplies an expanding range of propulsion equipment for most

current and planned vessels in naval service. Our portfolio includes gas turbines,
medium speed diesels, propellers, water jets and gearing covering a spectrum of
powers from 2.6 to 50MW. Our goal is to provide the optimum power solution
for most naval applications, through constant technological development and
product diversification.
We are maintaining our innovative tradition by developing the unique,
advanced cycle WR-21 gas turbine under a United States Navy contract with
support from the UK and France. For on-board power generation and the
propulsion of high-speed craft, our diesels and small gas turbines provide a
powerful set of options.
