Electrical Drawing and Diagram

Chapter 6. Electrical Drawing and Diagram >>1. Purpose

Why do we need an electric drawing?

• The drawing is the most effective way of communicating one’s ideas.

• An engineer uses a drawing to convey the ideas and plans necessary for execution
and completion of a project.

• The drawing acts as a communication tool between designers and manufacturers.

• The drawing acts as an analysis tool to help the designer identify the unknown
parameters.

• The drawing is used to clarify the requirements to complete a project.

Chapter 6. Electrical Drawing and Diagram >>3. Standards and their necessity

• Standards ensure that a drawing can be understood by anyone who uses it by

adopting a common set of symbols and terminology.

• Standards are necessary to make a drawing presentable and easy to read by

adopting proper arrangement of information.

• There are several common standard organizations:

Institution of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE)

E.g. IEEE/ANSI 315-1975 - IEEE Standard for Graphic Symbols for Electrical and
Electronics Diagrams (Including Reference Designation Letters)

HCM City Univ. of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering 6 Duong Van Tu

Chapter 6. Electrical Drawing and Diagram >>3. Standards and their necessity

National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)

E.g. NEMA Standards Publication ICS 19-2002 (R2007)

Diagrams, Device Designations, and Symbols for Industrial
Control and Systems.

Association of German Electrical Engineers (VDE)

E.g. DIN VDE 0100-520-1 VDE 0100-520-1:2019-11 Low-

voltage electrical installations - Part 5-52: Selection and
erection of electrical equipment - Wiring systems
International Standards Organisation (ISO)
E.g. ISO 14617-3:2002 Graphical symbols for diagrams.
HCM City Univ. of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering 7 Duong Van Tu
Chapter 6. Electrical Drawing and Diagram >>3. Standards and their necessity

ANSI: American National Standards Institute

E.g. ANSI/NETA ECS-2020 Standard for Electrical

Commissioning Specifications for Electrical Power Equipment
and Systems.

TCVN

E.g. Vietnamese standard TCVN 185:1974 on Electrical symbols

on premises.

JIS: Japanese Industrial Standards

E.g. JIS C 0617-2:2011 Graphical symbols for diagrams

HCM City Univ. of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering 8 Duong Van Tu

Chapter 6. Electrical Drawing and Diagram >>3. Standards and their necessity

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

E.g. NFPA 170 Standard for Fire Safety and Emergency Symbols

Joint Industrial Council (JIC)

E.g. JIC Standard Symbols for Electrical Ladder Diagrams

International electro-technical Commission (IEC)

E.g. IEC 60617-7:1996 Graphical symbols for diagrams.

HCM City Univ. of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering 9 Duong Van Tu

Chapter 6. Electrical Drawing and Diagram >>3. Standards and their necessity

In this lecture, we will adopt the IEC standards to make the electrical drawing.

Why uses IEC?

Many companies in Vietnam use the IEC standard of electrical drawings.

Most Vietnamese standards for electrical drawings are developed from the IEC
standards.
