TEEN TRAVEL TIPS >> MOSCOW
MONIQUE
Moscow is great for sightseeing I took photos everywhere I went. The only problem was
that I don't speak Russian, so it was hard to get a taxi, and I hate walking. My advice is to
take some Russian lessons before you go. I went to the aquarium on my first day. I
enjoyed it, but there were a lot of tourists. I preferred the quieter streets with little shops
selling postcards and presents. After I got gifts for my friends, I didn't have much money
left!
CARLA
The underground, or metro, is a great way to travel around, but too crowded for me. My
favourite place was Red Square. The buildings are amazing. But don't spend all your time
taking photos - I didn't. I bought postcards from the little shops. You don't need Russian.
Everyone speaks English. Oh, and I loved the street food and ate lots of it, but it wasn't
cheap The aquarium is fantastic. If you only go to one place, go there.
OLIVIA
My favourite place was Old Arbat one of the oldest streets in Moscow. I wanted to get
presents for my mum and dad, but all the shops had the same presents, so I didn't buy
much. I mostly ate street food because it didn't cost much, and it was delicious. I went to
the metro to look at the amazing stations, but I didn't travel on it. I went everywhere on
foot. You see so much that way.
For each question, choose the correct answer. Write M for Monique, C for Carla or
O for Olivia.

IS TEENAGE LIFE BETTER NOW THAN IN THE PAST?
-SIMON, 47, AND HIS DAUGHTER EMILY, 16, ANSWER TODAY QUESTION-
Simon: Everything is so different from when was a teenager. Technology is the greatest
change. I had a computer - but only for games, really. And I remember my dad's first
mobile phone in the car - It was huge! But the and smartphones changed teenage life
forever. We wrote letters; they are texting each other all day. We bought a few CDs every
month; they've got almost every song in the world - in a tiny device in their pocket!
When he moved home, we often never saw old friends again. Now it's simple to stay in
contact with anyone, anywhere. To me, teenage life looks more exciting than it was.
Not everything is positive, of course. I don't think teenagers now are as healthy as we
were in the past. They don't do enough exercise. Without technology, we more active and
spent a lot of our free time outside. Roads were safer, of course, but it's unbelievable to
think that often our parents didn't have any idea where we were!
Emily: Yes, technology makes our lives easier and is now essential for entertainment and
school. But it brings problems too the worst are awful things like bullying on social
media...
My problem is that teenage life is too busy now. On weekdays, as well as normal lessons,
there are clubs at lunchtimes. Then after school on Mondays I have Spanish lessons,
trumpet on Wednesdays and our band practises on Fridays. And weekends are just not
long enough! On Saturday there's yoga club and on Sunday we often see relatives. Then
there's homework, of course. Sometimes I'm exhausted on Sunday evenings!
The future will be harder for us, too. And I get worried about that. My friends and I feel
the most important thing is to get a good degree-or we won't be able to leave home and
get a job. And that means we have to get good marks in everything now. It's stressful.
I think my parents' teenage years were more relaxed than ours are today.

MAKING SHOES FOR FUN
- A BLOG BY SASCHA MARR, AGED 14 –
My hobby is making shoes. It's an unusual hobby, but I love the fantastic feeling of
wearing shoes that I've made myself.
I've always liked designing things I remember drawing clothes and shoes when I was
eight, and I made my first skirt aged nine. Then three years ago, I began making shoes,
and I now spend my free time doing that.
I became interested in making shoes when my cousin told me about an online shoe-
making course that he was doing. I immediately wanted to do one too. Mum booked me
on a four-day course at the I Can Make Shoes school in London to see if I liked it, and
then I did a ten-day course there in the summer holidays.
I loved the courses. On the longer one, I made four pairs of shoes! I couldn't believe it.
The teachers were excellent. That's what was best about the classes. They made us work
really hard but they wanted all their students to have fun, too.
I've made about 15 pairs sof shoes now. At the moment I'm making a pair of trainers
using an old pair of jeans, but I've used all kinds of different things before, from old
leather handbags to old cotton dresses!
Making shoes has changed my plans for the future. I know now that I want to be a
designer, but not a shoe designer I've decided I'll do home design. I've designed lots of
shoes and also some clothes, so I'd like to try something new.
For each question, choose the correct answer.
1. Making shoes has been Sascha's hobby
A. for eight years.
B. since she was nine.
C. for three years.
2. The first course that Sascha did in shoe making was
A. an online course.
B. four days long.
C. ten days long.
3. What did Sascha like most about the courses?
A. having fun with the other students
B. getting lots of shoes
C. having such good teachers
4 The shoes that Sascha is working on now, are made from
A. old jeans.
B. old handbags.
C. old dresses.
5 In the future, Sascha would like to be
A. a shoe designer.
B. a home designer.
C. a clothes designer.

Reading-Exercise 2 (p.9, Level 4) u2, Workbook

What do you think about SHOES?
We all wear shoes every day. They protect our feet from the things we do every day -
walking, school activities, sports and so on. But for some people they are more than that.
They follow shoe styles, and a good pair of trendy shoes or trainers will not be cheap.
Mag About You did a survey and we discovered that many of you pay a lot of money for
shoes. We think it's because they are an essential fashion item - specially for the youth of
today! A pair of shoes can make or break your style!
Here are some of the comments from the survey:
“I think it's a bit boring the way everyone in my school wears the same black leather
shoes. There are all kinds of shoes we could wear, but we have a uniform, and most
people follow the rules. There is one girl in my class who wears all kinds of different
things and she's creative, but she isn't fashionable in my opinion. My friends and I try to
be a bit different and wear black trainers instead. We buy them from the same shop. But
we like them!” - Raffic, South Africa
“I love shoes, especially trainers. They are trendy and comfortable. You can wear them
with everything-trousers, skirts and so on. At school we did a project where we had to
add something to a pair of white trainers. I wrote half my name on the left and the other
half on the right. It was such a cool project!” - Anne Belle, New Zealand
“At my school we all have to wear these silly black or brown shoes. They look quite
scruffy after a few months. Nobody likes them. Anyway, the kinds of shoes we can wear at
school is a big story at the moment! The school agrees now that the style of the uniform
is unfashionable. Our art teacher can give the school some advice! She has a great
collection of shoes, and in the summer her sandals are always so pretty. She's really
well-dressed. I want to dress like her.” - Zehra, Turkey

EX1: Look at the article about shoes before reading it. Tick (✔) where it comes

3. Raffi wears the same shoes as his friends. T
4. Anne Belle wrote her name on her trainers. T
5. At Zehra's school, her classmates wear stylish shoes. F
6. Zehra admires her art teacher's style. T

EX3: Match the highlighted words in the article to their meanings.
